High tea fundraiser set before Point Loma dance theater performance

The founders of the nonprofit Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater in Liberty Station will be honored at a fundraiser high tea reception Jan. 22 before that Sunday’s performance of “Janus,” the winter repertory concert.
Both will take place at the Saville Theater at City College, 1313 Park Blvd. in downtown San Diego.
SDDT founders George Willis, Lolita Donoso-Carter, and Johanna Weikel will be honored. At 1 p.m. the guests will have high tea on the Saville Theater stage before the “Janus” performance.
It’s the 45th anniversary celebration of SDDT, which has made its home in Point Loma for years.
SDDT volunteer Leslie Carter said it’s all for a good cause.
“The fundraiser is to help cover the cost of a grant they lost covering the children’s and seniors’ programs,” Carter said, noting SDDT hosts numerous dance classes for youth and older adults, including an aging creative program that accounts for her involvement.
“There are six or seven dance classes that are really excellent for people more than 55 years old,” Carter said adding, “I came to take the senior dance classes – and they put me to work helping with the publicity.”
Event proceeds will benefit education and outreach for children’s and seniors’ programs.
“Janus and Other Dances of Beginnings, Transitions, and Endings” will be the 19th edition of Jean Isaacs’ San Diego Dance Company’s January repertory concert.
The concert will be presented over three days: Jan. 20, 22 and 23 at the Saville Theater. Hours are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
The new work “Janus” calls to mind the Roman god of January whose legendary perspective is equally forward and backward. The premier production features dancers Minaqua McPherson and Desiree Cuizon-Ferjeran bound together back-to-back. One’s perspective is to the future and the other to the past.
The characters in the dance must choose whether to struggle with their relationship (war) or to work together striving toward the mutual goal of peace.
Steve Baker, San Diego Dance Theater’s company composer, contributes the original score.
Ticket prices are $35, general admission, $25 senior/military and $15 students with ID.
