Three childhood friends kicked-off the weekend June 25 with a meal at Cass Street Bar and Grill and a bike ride, but one of the bicycles was anything but a typical beach cruiser. Dan Cheatham and Guiseppie Pasquale Onofrio are in town visiting their friend, Jeff Umbaugh, a Pacific Beach resident. Cheatham brought with him from Phoenix, Ariz,, what he calls a high bike. “They built them originally as lamplighters,” Cheatham said. The height of the bicycle enabled people to light street lamps high above the ground. It is a two-wheeled bicycle and the seat sits six feet above the ground. The bicycle has a steering wheel instead of handlebars. Cheatham constructed the single-speed blue high bike himself.
