May 8 is Mother’s Day in the United States, and this year’s bash looks to be a good time as always, because so many of us have moms, living or dead. If you’re one of the few who didn’t get one, never fear – the 8th is a virtual cornucopia to fall back on with things like National Coconut Cream Pie Day or No Socks Day or National Have a Coke Day. And nothin’ says fun like Harry Truman’s birthday (he’ll be 132). La Jolla restaurants, though, are gearing up for the more tradition-minded, and accordingly, we have a few suggestions. Chances are you are or will be booked for outings at places like George’s at the Cove or the Marine Room – and while these venues are among the Village’s very best, less obvious choices abound in the area, with no lapse in service and intent. Who knows; you might even be tempted to score a slice of that coconut cream, in which case you’ll be feting two holidays in one. Bistro du Marche by Tapenade: Most people know this place by its old handle (the Tapenade), but we thought we’d include it here since this is its first year at a new locale. This favorite French eatery hasn’t lost a step since its move from its old Fay Avenue digs, and it’s not about to slow down for the big day. It’s open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will serve up a three-course prix fixe menu for $39; the quiche Lorraine and the king salmon here are to die for, although you probably won’t want to go that far. There’s also a $20 kids menu. 7437 Girard Ave., (858) 551-7500, bistrodumarche.net. Roy’s: Yvonne Elliman, late of “Jesus Christ Superstar” fame (she sang the Mary Magdalene role), has a gig in Hawaii on Mother’s Day, which means we won’t get to see her – but true to its Hawaii-inspired task, Roy’s will make you forget all about Yvonne’s fling with paradise. It’s got a two-course brunch going for $35.95 and will open at 10 a.m. Filet mignon or crab cakes are the order of the day at this Asian fusion locale, with your choice of appetizer and the eatery’s popular Brioche sticky buns. A $12.95 kids menu is also on tap. 8670 Genesee Ave., (858) 455-1616, roysrestaurant.com. Cusp Dining & Drinks: Everybody says his restaurant has the best views of the ocean – but Cusp isn’t taking a back seat here, especially since it sits on an 11th floor. You’ll dine on the Village’s best Mediterranean fare way up there, and you can start as early as 9 a.m. to boot – meanwhile, if you make your reservation between 9 and 10 a.m. on Mother’s day, you’ll save an incredible 30 percent on the brunch. Meanwhile, the albacore and salmon have your name on them. 7955 La Jolla Shores Dr., (858) 551-3620, cusprestaurant.com. Mustangs & Burros: We think this Estancia La Jolla locale picked its name in an appeal to the four-legged among us, but that doesn’t mean you’re uninvited. In fact, mom will go nuts for the $80 brunch price tag (which includes two glasses of wine) as she’s surrounded by lush botanical gardens and entertained by a Spanish guitarist. Like a little cheese with your quesadilla or salmon with your tacos? You’ve come to the right place, especially with kids in tow – they’ll dine for only $30 apiece. 9700 N. Torrey Pines Road, (855) 567-2400, estancialajolla.com. Eddie V’s: Nowhere in the recorded history of the universe have Mother’s Day brunch drinks been cheaper than they are here. Mimosas, bloody Marys and Bellinis for $7? That’s enough to drive a person to eat, which she/he can do at a paltry $49 for three courses, including cinnamon rolls. Smoke salmon and lump crab dot the appetizer part, with the main course, including lobster quiche and steak and eggs, not far behind. Live music rules the house from 11 a.m to 8 p.m., and it’ll go well with your dessert. There’s a kids menu for $15. 1270 Prospect St., (858) 459-5500, eddiev.com. Well, folks, that’s about all we have time for today. This itinerary should hold you until next Mother’s Day, because, after all, you can only eat at one restaurant at a time. Come to think of it, with all those nondescript holidays out there, you’re probably tempted to try more than one. National Student Nurse Day, anybody?
