Groundbreaking starts on 'The Boardwalk' in Torrey Pines, Peloton opens showroom and other business briefs

CBRE ANNOUNCES GROUNDBREAKING OF ‘THE BOARDWALK’

CBRE recently announced the groundbreaking of The Boardwalk, a Class A lab and office campus in Torrey Pines, San Diego. Located at 10265, 10275 and 10285 Science Center Drive, The Boardwalk will feature three buildings that total more than 195,000 square feet. Amenities will include a gourmet café, conference center, 5,000-square-foot fitness center and a 1-acre park with outdoor meeting and collaboration spaces. The property is located just west of Interstate 5 and is within walking distance of University of California, San Diego.

CBRE’sJed Stirnkorb, Rich Danesi and Andrew Huggett are the leasing agents for the project. The landlord, Irvine, California-based REIT Healthpeak Properties, owns more than 25 million square feet of R&D and office buildings throughout the U.S.

“The Boardwalk is in the heart of great universities and many innovative companies that create a highly educated talent pool and opportunities for unique collaborations,” said Danesi. “Torrey Pines is the ideal location for such a state-of-the-art lab and office campus and the CBRE team is extremely excited for the opportunity to lease such an incredible asset.”

Healthpeak will commence construction on the $164 million life science development in January of 2020 and is expected to accommodate occupancy as early as the second quarter of 2021. The campus will combine three adjacent Healthpeak holdings, activating two land sites through 110,000 square feet of ground-up development that will flank both sides of an existing 85,000-square-foot property that will also be redeveloped.

SMASHBURGER CLOSES LA JOLLA LOCATION

Smashburger in La Jolla closed about a month ago. Supposedly their lease was around $18,000 a month, and after their overhead expenses, they just weren’t making any money.

LA JOLLA COSMETIC SURGERY CENTRE AWARDED

MyFaceMyBody, one of the most highly recognized awards programs in the aesthetics industry, presented by Global Aesthetics, has named La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre as “Practice Team of the Year, USA, 2019” for the second consecutive year. Each year, MyFaceMyBody recognizes a select few aesthetic practices and brands worldwide for its customer service excellence.

La Jolla Cosmetics Surgery Centre (LJCSC), one of San Diego’s most prestigious and awarded aesthetic practices, has earned 18 San Diego Union Tribune (SDUT) Reader’s Choice Awards. This includes 11-time winner of “San Diego’s Best Cosmetic Surgery Group,” six-time winners of the SDUT’s “Best Medical Spa,” and a 2019 winner of “Best Weight Loss Clinic.” LJCSC founder and Medical Director Emeritus R. Merrel Olesen, MD, and his wife Marie, authored “Cosmetic Surgery For Dummies,” that guides consumers through today’s top procedures, candidly addressing both the benefits and the risks. The book is one of the series of “For Dummies” books by Wiley Publishing.

“We’re deeply honored to receive the 2019 USA Practice Team of the Year Award from MyFaceMyBody again this year,” said Marie Olesen, LJCSC chief executive officer. “The award recognizes our outstanding team of physicians and support staff who have collectively earned La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre and Medical Spa an outstanding reputation in our community.”

PROMINENT LA JOLLA PLASTIC SURGEON RETIRES

Dr. Ervin Wheeler, a plastic surgeon at the La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, will retire at the end of January 2020.

The first in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Wheeler studied at the University of Michigan Medical School before completing an internship at Stanford University and advancing to two residencies at the UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Wheeler always felt a calling to become a doctor, but it wasn’t until his internship at Stanford that he realized plastic surgery was the right path for him. He saw how plastic surgery can immediately improve people’s self-confidence and outlook on life and dedicated his career to providing the safest, most advanced plastic surgery procedures to his patients.

In addition to serving his patients, Dr. Wheeler traveled to Mexico several times a year as a volunteer with Interface, an organization of plastic and other reconstructive surgeons who give their time and expertise to offer reconstructive surgery to children in Mexico. For more than 34 years, Dr. Wheeler serves the poor by providing free plastic surgery services, such as cleft-lip and palate repair, burn scar reconstruction, and repair of other facial trauma.
