Gridders kick off season with victories

Several local scholastic football teams kicked off the 2009 season last weekend with victories. La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School rolled to a 49-7 win over Calvin Christian High. Linebacker Mical Bailey got the game going LJCD’s way during Calvin’s first offensive possession when he intercepted a pass and returned it 29 yards to the 2-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Derek Hatfield sneaked the ball across the goal line to put the Torreys up 6-0. The rout was on and LJCD would lead 28-0 at the half and 42-0 after three quarters. Offensively, LJCD was led by Hatfield and running back Montell Allen. Hatfield hit on 8-of-14 passes for 142 yards and four touchdowns.  Hatfield’s four TDs went to Connor Gerhart, Ruben Pena, Alberto Yanez and Bailey. Hatfield added 67 yards rushing and one TD on 11 carries. Anthony Torres led all receivers with three catches for 64 yards. Allen led all rushers with 91 yards. and one TD on seven carries. Gerhart added 32 yards on five carries and Mac Kaland rushed for 40 yards and a TD also on five carries. The Torrey defense was led by Bailey who, in addition to his interception, led all tacklers with seven stops (five solos). Gerhart and Kaland each made five tackles, while Torres and Joel Juarez each snagged interceptions. Hunter Khaleghi was perfect in the kicking game, hitting on all seven PAT’s. In the junior varsity contest, LJCD rolled to a 40-14 victory. LJCD will host The Meadows School (Nevada) on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Elsewhere, The Bishop’s School rolled to a 56-0 win over Tijuana Instituto Mexico and University City High dropped a 32-0 decision to El Capitan. Finally, La Jolla High was awarded a forfeit victory over Clairemont High. The scheduled Sept. 4 game was canceled as Clairemont coach Rian Floco reported that approximately a dozen Chieftains players broke school rules. The athletes had to sit out a game, which depleted Clairemont’s roster for its slated contest at La Jolla.
