Greater Golden Hill, North Park and Uptown Community Plan Updates: Why are they so important?

On Sept. 11, the City of San Diego’s City Planning & Community Investment Department began a series of meetings regarding the future vision of three of the city’s oldest communities. These meetings involve a three-day charrette process for each of the communities undergoing Community Plan Updates: Greater Golden Hill, North Park and Uptown.

A charrette is an open and interactive meeting format where community members work closely with city staff and consultants to develop concepts for the Community Plan Update. The final step after the charrette meetings will be to evaluate the concepts and begin drafting the Community Plan Update.

As a land-use policy document, these plans provide the community-specific policies and implementation strategies necessary to fulfill the goals of the citywide General Plan. The recent update to the General Plan shifts focus from how to develop vacant land to how to design infill development and reinvest in existing communities.

Further, community plans establish policies on a wide array of topics including: mobility, open space and parks, provision of public facilities, sustainable development, urban design and historic preservation.

Each plan update is an open opportunity for residents to participate in shaping their own community. It is important that the city hears from all community stakeholders.

Currently, the communities of Greater Golden Hill, North Park and Uptown are updating their Community Plans. Below is the schedule for each community’s charrette series.
