Local scholastic golfers hope to tee off on winning seasons this spring.
At The Bishop’s School, head coach Billy Subang and the Knights are coming off a 7-6 season last year. The Knights placed fourth in the Coastal South League.
“With so many graduating seniors, I am looking forward to Steve Schoelen, Peter Stougaard and Spencer Bisbas to help carry the season,” Subang said. “I have no seniors on the team, but four promising freshman players. As always, we strive to do the best we can and to be competitive.”
Bishop’s opened with league favorite Francis Parker earlier this week, then heads to Coronado for action today, March 20.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings are under new head coach Allen Merryman. Last year’s team went 12-5.
Merryman believes key golfers this season will include Dylan Jackson, Kevin Mulvihill, team captain Riley Roberts and Nick Johnson.
“They are capable of being low medalists and have been this year so far,” Merryman noted.
While the Western League competition is tough, Merryman believes the Vikings will be competitive.
“As a young team this year with a desire to win, I believe we can make some noise,” Merryman continued. “Focus, diligent practice and stepping up to win difficult matches will be the challenge.”
At La Jolla Country Day School, head coach Bill Cahoone’s squad went 19-3 last spring.
The Torreys finished with their fourth consecutive Coastal South crown along the way and have been undefeated in league play since April of ’03.
“With only two returning starters, the team will find itself in a rebuilding mode,” Cahoone said. “Seniors Sam Rogers and Grant Alter will lead the team as both are four-year starters. We expect freshmen Max and Jake Hershfield to contribute immediately, while junior Peter Blanchard and seniors Blake Morgan and William Duncan will also share playing time.”
Cahoone added that the team hopes to finish in the upper half of the Coastal South and qualify for CIFs as an at-large team.
Heading into play this week, LJCD was sitting on a record of 3-4.
Cahoone noted that Alter has played very well for the team and been match medalist six out of seven times. Rogers medaled in the team’s other match and has also scored well.
