Some highs and lows were recorded during the 2007 scholastic girls golf season for three local teams.
The Bishop’s School under head coach Chuck Courtney finished the season with an 8-2 record, with losses only to ’06 state champ Poway and league rival Francis Parker. Bishop’s was 8-1 in conference play.
In the Coastal League tournament late last month, Bishop’s finished very strong with a 214 for second place over Francis Parker. Parker had an astounding 190. Bishop’s Denell Falk had her season-best score of 79.
Falk was also voted to the All-Conference First-Team. Second-Team All-Conference honors went to Alexa Bisbas, Courtney Gill, Libby Hooton and Anne Williams.
“The girls had a good season and look forward to a better one next year,” Courtney remarked. “All the top players are returning, and at least one excellent freshman is expected to join the squad next fall.”
At La Jolla High, head coach Chris Spence and the Lady Vikings went 5-10 for fifth place in the Western League.
Key members included senior Taylor Doyle, who finished ranked the top City Conference player at the conclusion of the season. Doyle was fifth at the City Conference tournament and fifth at CIF Section Finals.
“It was an excellent season of growth of our freshmen players,” Spence noted. “Taylor (Doyle) has continued her excellent play in the post-season.”
Doyle was to compete this past Monday in the Southern California CIF regionals. Regionals is the final leg before advancing to the state championships on Nov. 15 at Poppy Hills.
At La Jolla Country Day School, head coach Bill Cahoone and the Lady Torreys finished at 3-5.
“Due to the fires, we missed three matches,” Cahoone noted. “Two were against San Dieguito Academy, which hadn’t won a match, and the other was against Francis Parker, the league champ. So, I figured that we would have been 5 and 6 if we finished the season out.
“In our 9-hole league final, we finished fifth out of six teams. We posted three fairly low scores of 49 by senior Emily Goldberg, 51 by junior Kelsey Alan-Lee and a 53 by senior Lizzie Ellison.”
Cahoone said he was pleased with the team’s progress over the course of the season.
“We had a high of 371 in our first match and improved by 89 strokes to a low of 282 by the end of the season,” Cahoone added.
