The Bishop’s School girls water polo team doesn’t seem to miss a beat, opening its season with a 4-0 mark.
Having won the last three CIF crowns, the Lady Knights under head coach Doug Peabody appear to once again be the team to beat.
Bishop’s opened 4-0, beating UC 17-3, Patrick Henry 18-0, Coronado 11-8 and Newport Harbor High for the first time in four years, 10-8.
Senior goalie Christina Michel and junior Zinnea Alexander were both impressive in the Coronado and Newport wins. Michel blocked three penalty shots and had nine other saves against Coronado, then notched 12 saves against Newport.
Bishop’s was led in scoring this past week by Sarah Van Norman with three against Newport, four at home against Coronado, four against UC, and five against Patrick Henry. Alexander stole the show by going 3-for-3 against Coronado, with two coming in the decisive fourth quarter, as well as the sealing steal.
Chelsea Smith-Carmichael had a good week with nine goals. Sophomore Dominique Sardo leads the team in steals over the first four games with 19, to go along with five goals and four assists.
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings opened action last week with a 5-4 loss to Poway. La Jolla got goals from Mollie Chadwick (two), Keller Felt and Jackie Walters.
In action the next day, La Jolla topped Scripps Ranch 10-5. Felt, along with Michelle Hook, tallied three goals in the victory, with Chadwick, Walters, Kelly Bishop and Morgan Ryan also scoring.
La Jolla also notched a 16-10 win over Patrick Henry. Felt led the way with four goals, while Hook had three, and Walters and Chadwick each added a pair.
At University City High, head coach Ty Lackey’s Lady Centurions came into the week with a 3-6 overall mark, including 1-2 in league play.
“We are off to a rocky start early, but we have played against some of the better teams in the county early,” Lackey noted.
