Girl Scouts to launch run, health expo

The NTC Promenade at Liberty Station will be the site of a Girl Scout San Diego-Imperial Council inaugural “Run/Walk for a New Day” and health expo on Saturday morning.
Organizers say about 2,500 participants are expected in Point Loma to complete the scenic 5K or one-mile courses.
The 5K run/walk will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the one-mile run/walk at 8:30.
The finish line celebration will include live entertainment, refreshments, giveaways and a health fair. Each child age 12 or under will receive a medal, and awards will go to the top three finishers in each of the 14 divisions.
A T-shirt is included with entry fees, which range from $15 to $30. The USA Track & Field body has sanctioned the event and certified the course.
According to organizers, Saturday’s event is designed to encourage girls, boys and adults to take the first step toward positive change and think about the importance of a balanced, healthful lifestyle.
Health fair booths will focus on emotional, physical and spiritual well-being, with topics that range from self-esteem and body image to nutrition and personal power. Attendees are encouraged to make a “New Day Resolution” about something they’d like to change, add to their lives or undertake to help their communities. If desired, the resolutions may be shared with others by posting them at the finish line.
“Run/Walk for a New Day” is one of several programs and events inspired by Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council’s Healthy Girls, Healthy Lives Initiative.
Sharp Health Plan is presenting sponsor of the run/walk, while Cox Communications is the media partner.
