The gift-giving season has arrived.

Instead of agonizing over what to buy for the people on your list, here are some book recommendations so you can make them something from the heart that they are sure to love.

Did you jump on the Cricut bandwagon, only to find it collecting dust in the closet? Libby Ashcraft’s Crafting with Digital Cutting Machines will get you up to speed on all the ins and outs of your machine, along with some easy projects for beginners. Once you’ve got the basics down, you can take your skills to the next level with The Makers Guide to Cricut by Megan Meketa. This book features wearables and home décor for gifting, and how to make everything you need to decorate for your holiday parties.

If you are interested in working with fibers, crochet is great for beginners. Justine Tui founded the website thewoobles.com, featuring cute and easy patterns for beginners of amigurumi, or stuffed crocheted toys, as well as everything-you-need kits to make crochet accessible for anyone.

In her new book Crochet Amigurumi for Every Occasion she’s compiled 21 easy patterns to make adorably gift-able creatures. For the more practical beginner, check out Everyday Crochet by June Gilbank for 15 cozy and stylish projects.

For the eco-conscious gift-er, check out Green Gifts by Rosie James, and Sustainable Gifting by Michelle Mackintosh. These books feature projects and ideas for upcycling and reusing to create beautiful handmade sustainable and zero-waste gifts, as well as information and instruction on sustainable packaging and wrapping.

You can explore art and crafting at the library with our new quarterly series “Art in the Evenings.”

The series kicks off on Wednesday, Dec. 7 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. with “Painting Makes Perfect.” All supplies are provided, and registration is required.

The La Mesa Branch is excited to welcome back Richard Lederer for his presentation “Fun with Grammar” on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. Check our events page at sdcl.org for full details on each event.

We have reintroduced our Math Coaching program, with a skilled volunteer helping K-12th graders with their math homework.

Call for details and registration at (619) 469-2151.
