Fundraiser set for PLHS administrator battling cancer

Point Loma High School vice principal Kevin Gormly is continuing to battle a brain tumor found in October after he experienced severe headaches.
Now, a fundraiser is being planned at his wife’s school, and a GoFundMe account has been set up to help his family.
Despite Gormly’s several surgeries and setbacks, his family remains courageous in supporting the administrator, who is well liked by students and staff. A fundraiser walk is planned for Monday, May 23 at St. Augustine High School, 3266 Nutmeg St., where Gormly’s wife works. The event, titled “Show Your Love for La Familia Gormly,” begins at 5:30 p.m. Donations can also be made at gofundme.com/22kgef4u.
A history of Gormly’s illness posted on social media by his family says he was diagnosed with glioblastoma and gliosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive type of brain cancer. Gormly underwent surgery, but physicians were unable to remove all the tumor. Gormly began radiation and chemo soon after to kill the remaining part of the tumor.
Near Christmas, Gormly again began experiencing severe headaches, and further testing showed he had a small new tumor and that the original tumor was growing. Further radiation and two types of chemo followed.
Soon, the incision site reopened, and he was given a three-week break before further chemo, during which he was able to enjoy himself and play outside with his children.
In early April, Gormly experienced a setback when two new small tumors were identified in a different location. In late April, doctors found these new tumors had grown aggressively.
Early this month, Gormly returned home under hospice care and is reported to be resting comfortably.
The family’s social media message says, “Kevin’s prognosis is not good, and it has devastated our family. We ask that you keep Kevin and our family in your prayers. We know that God works miracles, and we believe that Kevin is a miracle himself.”
Gormly has worked at Point Loma High School for nearly two decades and has taken a strong interest in the school’s rich history.
