SAN DIEGO — The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday, July 26 to end Floatopias by closing the loophole in the beach alcohol ban that allows individuals to consume alcohol while floating offshore. The term “bathers” will be added to the law, making it illegal for those on floatation devices to consume alcohol within three nautical miles of the shore. The law will not affect those in boats. Prior to the July 17 Floatopia event, which attracted approximately 1,500 participants throughout the day, it was estimated that Floatopias have cost the city more than $20,000 for safety personnel. Proponents for the ban cited safety, excess trash and the financial strain on the city resources as reasons for supporting the addition to the law.
