A fire that began above one of the rooms at the Bay Club Hotel and Marina on Shelter Island on Tuesday, Jan. 8 led to the evacuation of about 20 guests at about 6:24 a.m., officials said.
The two-alarm blaze started in the attic above an empty room and was caused by an electrical malfunction in the outside lighting, said Maurice Luque, spokesman for San Diego Fire and Rescue Department.
The blaze caused about $250,000 damage to the structure and content of the hotel.
“Guests were all evacuated safely by hotel staff and by themselves. No one was hurt,” Luque said.
About 60 firefighters, eight engines and four trucks responded to the fire, which took about a half-hour to extinguish, Luque said.
He added that fire officials have not determined if the rain caused the electrical malfunction, but he said the room that was the ignition source sustained about $50,000 worth of damage to the room’s contents.
Firefighters tried to minimize the damage by covering the floor and furniture with a protective material, he said.
