If you’ve ever wanted to travel with the circus, you can with the Fern Street Circus’s “Around the World Cruise.” Balboa Park will be welcoming the local circus act for 12 performances this month before it commences its tour throughout San Diego. The Fern Street Circus is known as San Diego’s Community Circus because it has been performing here exclusively since 1991. In addition to being San Diego’s own circus group, the Fern Street Circus is also very active in the community with after-school programs that help kids learn circus skills and even perform for smaller community events. The Balboa Park performances will kick off the Circus’s 2006 tour. In June, the Circus will commence its tour of San Diego’s neighborhoods. The “Around the World Cruise,” Fern Street Circus’s newest show, is based on the theme of an international ocean voyage. The show incorporates a number of acts that correspond with the different destinations of the cruise, from China to Brazil and beyond. It will also include the classic circus clown skits and aerial acts that have defined the circus experience for over a century.”Some people are huge clown fans, some people are huge tumbling fans,” said Laura Stansell, executive director of the Fern Street Circus. “I think in circus, in general, it’s a combination of many different arts into a format that allows them all to coexist. There’s something for everyone.”This year’s show features La Jolla Country Day School student Miles Ornish, who will juggle and ride a unicycle. The Fern Street Circus will appear at Balboa Park from May 19 to 28.Performances will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, 1, 4 and 8 p.m. on Saturday; at 1 p.m., and 1 and 4 p.m. on Sunday.Admission is $7 for children and $14 for adults. Tickets are available at the door, by phone at (619) 235-9756 or online at www.fernstreetcircus.com.
