Come by some hard luck at the tables lately?
The Ocean Beach Town Council is offering a chance to turn it all around during the Casino Night fund-raising event Saturday Oct. 6, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Masonic Center Hall, 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
Hosted by the Town Council’s board of directors, Casino Night will offer a night of dinner and faux casino action to adults 21 and over with proceeds going to the board’s treasury to help cover costs of future community events such as neighborhood cleanups, said Nancy Vaughn, board secretary and Casino Night coordinator.
“It’s a party, really, with casino games,” Vaughn said. “Hopefully, everyone will have enough fun that they say, ‘Let’s do it again next year.'”
Souplantation provides the dinner while the Olive Tree Marketplace on Narrangansett Street supplies the wine, she said. Guests will also receive about $200 in faux gaming chips to spend on craps, Texas Hold’em, blackjack and other games.
Prizes will be available for raffle for winning players along with $20 “balloon prizes” available for all to win.
The money raised from ticket sales will supplement the council’s treasure. The board gets most of its money from government grants, some of which are used to cover supplies and promotional costs to benefit various community groups, according to Shaina Gross, board member communications liaison.
Previous Town Council grantees include the OB Community Foundation, Point Loma High School Music Department, Peninsula Youth Ball, Ocean Beach Planning Board, Dollars for Scholars program, Point Loma Surf Team, Ocean Beach Historical Society, Sunset Cliffs Surfing Association and Ocean Beach Skateboardships, according to Gross.
Tickets for the event cost $40 before Saturday and can be purchased at local businesses and community groups including the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, Newport Avenue Antique Center, John Baker Picture Frames and Dog Beach Dog Wash, Vaughn said.
Vaughn, a recently re-elected incumbent, said she hopes the event grows into a bigger event in the future to provide another opportunity for community members to become involved with the board’s activities throughout the year.
She said she looks forward to working with the community to increase Town Council membership.
This year’s membership voting block consisted of about 160 members, she said.
According to the council’s mission statement, the Ocean Beach Town Council is dedicated to providing a community forum and providing a means of communication between the Ocean Beach community and its agencies.
The board also works to provide opportunities for Ocean Beach residents and business owners to interact with their elected officials, Vaughn said.
For more information, visit www.obtowncouncil.org. To purchase tickets visit authorized vendors or call Vaughn at (619) 523-0056.
