For the third year in a row, Ocean Beach’s Electric Chair Salon and Primitive Kool Gallery will host a fashion show to aid a local organization.
In years past, the Standing Room Only fashion show has provided funds for tsunami relief as well as Mama’s Kitchen, a nonprofit food service for people affected by AIDS. This year, the fund-raiser benefit for the Start the Arts program at Ocean Beach Elementary School. The program provides students with art instruction that would be otherwise unavailable.
“It seems like the need is greater in the public school system. The art program is going in line with what we do with our Primitive Kool Art Gallery and that’s usually a good cause that people are willing to come out for,” said Lynne Bolton.
Bolton and her husband, Paul, are the salon’s co-owners and have organized the Standing Room Only fashion show for the last three years.
In addition to raising funds for the arts, Standing Room Only provides an opportunity for the stylists and makeup artists at The Electric Chair to showcase their art. The show will feature volunteer models who will display makeup and hairstyles created by Electric Chair staff as well as clothing donated by local clothing stores. A number of other donations have been made for the show, including door prizes, food from local restaurants, a catwalk, DJ equipment and performances.
“It’s a combined effort to get everybody onboard and working together and to benefit the community at the same time,” Bolton said.
Bolton and her husband are still seeking any donations that the community can provide to help cover the costs of the show or direct contributions to Start the Arts.
Since the event will be held at The Electric Chair and Primitive Kool Gallery, the gallery will also use the opportunity to sell a number of its paintings in a silent auction. The funds gathered from this auction will also be contributed to Start the Arts.
Standing Room Only will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 27 at The Electric Chair Salon and Primitive Kool Gallery, 4944 Newport Ave. in Ocean Beach.
Tickets cost $10 and are available in advance at The Electric Chair or at the door during the event. For more information call (619) 222-0836.
