Husband-and-wife team Elena and Jeff Wormington opened Yogurt on the Rocks at 1886 Garnet Ave. on Friday, July 31. Elena, 28, chose tall tables and bar stools the interior and wicker lounge furniture for the outside seating because she wanted to create a yogurt shop that was a cross between a pub and a Starbucks. “It’s our first business,” Elena said. “We wanted to put our own twist on it. It’s a place where people can go out for a cup of yogurt and chat with a friend.” Elena believes the trend has turned toward self-service yogurt shops that offer a healthier alternative to ice cream. Located on the eastern end of Garnet Avenue near Ingraham Street, Elena believes Yogurt on the Rocks is also far enough away from the popular competitor Yogurtland at 855 Garnet Ave. Initially, Yogurt on the Rocks will offer 14 flavors of yogurt ranging from raspberry pomegranate tart or strawberry and banana to peanut butter chocolate and non-dairy alternatives, plus 34 different toppings. With a gym across the plaza, the couple will also consider blending smoothies and offering nutritional bars. The Wormington’s are leasing the property from Bruegger’s bagels and so are limited to what they can sell so as not to compete with the bagel shop. “Everyone wants something healthy and light these days,” Elena said. “You can make it your own and play around with it. The self-service gives you the freedom to be creative.” Elena originally wanted to name the store Yogurt Tini but a store in Arizona already had that title. “The store has a cute, little martini symbol – that’s exactly what I would have done but someone beat me to it,” Elena said.
