This \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif;\"><span lang=\"en\">J<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en\">ewel\u201d is <\/span>mentioned in everything from song lyrics to novels and much more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">La Jolla\u2019s history is as rich as its pristine beaches, beautiful homes, the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavalencia.com\/\">Hotel Valencia<\/a> (The Pink Lady), and so much more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en\">The Spanish word for La Jolla is \u201cJoya,\u201d which is similar in pronunciation to Jolla, and translates to Jewel. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Jolla\"><span lang=\"en\">Historians<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"en\"> say sometime in the 19th century when Spanish colonials arrived on the land, they called it Joya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en\">Here\u2019s some example<\/span><span lang=\"en\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en\"> that you might not have known where La Jolla is mentioned or referred to in various instances <\/span>from song lyrics to novels and has even been the place for a comic book publisher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">NAME IN PAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">As previously reported, La Jolla\u2019s La Valencia Hotel (under the faux name &#8220;Esmerelda&#8221;) is the setting for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raymond_Chandler\" target=\"Raymond Chandler\" rel=\"noopener\">Raymond Chandler<\/a>&#8216;s final <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Marlowe\" target=\"Philip Marlowe\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip Marlowe<\/a> novel, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Playback_(novel)\" target=\"Playback (novel)\" rel=\"noopener\">Playback<\/a>,\u201d published in 1958.<br \/>\nChandler lived in La Jolla for the previous decade and in the book La Jolla&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hotel_del_Charro\" target=\"Hotel del Charro\" rel=\"noopener\">Hotel del Charro<\/a> becomes &#8220;Rancho Descansado.\u201d Several of the mentioned landmarks described within its page can still be found today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Other books can be found<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mappit.net\/bookmap\/places\/1501\/la-jolla-san-diego-ca-us\/\"> aqu\u00ed<\/a> that mention or are based in\/around La Jolla. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelcrichton.com\/\">Michael Crichton\u2019<\/a>s novel \u201cNext\u201d \u201cblends fact and fiction into a tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems, and a set of new possibilities can open at every turn. \u2018Next\u2019 challenges our sense of reality and notions of morality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookseriesinorder.com\/clive-cussler\/\">Clive Cussler<\/a>,<\/u><\/span> author of the celebrated Dirk Pitt novels \u201cTreasure of Khan\u201d and \u201cValhalla Rising,\u201d presents the third novel in his newest series, called \u201cThe Kingdom\u201d following the adventures of treasure hunters Sam and Remi Fargo. \u201cThe Kingdom\u201d follows Spartan Gold and Lost Empire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mappit.net\/bookmap\/places\/1501\/la-jolla-san-diego-ca-us\/\">Lady Lazarus<\/a> by Andrew Foster Altschul is described as \u201ca poetic satire of rock \u2019n roll and a rock \u2019n roll ode to poetry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mappit.net\/bookmap\/places\/1501\/la-jolla-san-diego-ca-us\/\">The Fat Innkeeper<\/a> by Alan Russell is \u201cabout a doctor investigating fraud in a visiting New Age cult who winds up dead, hotel detective Am Caulfield scours the premises for clues while struggling to keep a group of swingers under control, in the sequel to \u2018The Hotel Detective.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Besides juicy novels, mysteries, and more, if you\u2019re a comic book fan, you might already know that La Jolla was where the comic book publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WildStorm\" target=\"WildStorm\" rel=\"noopener\">WildStorm Productions<\/a>, founded by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Lee\" target=\"Jim Lee\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Lee<\/a> in 1993, shuttered its doors in 2012 when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DC_Comics\" target=\"DC Comics\" rel=\"noopener\">DC Comics<\/a>, which had bought the publisher as an imprint in 1998, took over the company and moved the offices to Burbank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">SONGS<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">For all you Beach Boys followers, La Jolla is mentioned in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Beach_Boys\" target=\"The Beach Boys\" rel=\"noopener\">Beach Boys&#8217;<\/a> 1963 song \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surfin%27_U.S.A._(song)\" target=\"Surfin' U.S.A. (song)\" rel=\"noopener\">Surfin&#8217; U.S.A.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">La Jolla is also mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Network\" target=\"The Network\" rel=\"noopener\">The Network&#8217;s<\/a> 2003 song \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Money_Money_2020\" target=\"Money Money 2020\" rel=\"noopener\">Spike<\/a>\u201d and more recently, on June 25, 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilbur_Soot\" target=\"Wilbur Soot\" rel=\"noopener\">Wilbur Soot<\/a> released an album called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Your_City_Gave_Me_Asthma\" target=\"Your City Gave Me Asthma\" rel=\"noopener\">Your City Gave Me Asthma<\/a>,\u201d which included a song called La Jolla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">SCREENS<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Of course, many a film, documentary, or reality series has been made in La Jolla. For instance \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ohnyjmz-aCg\">Cruise of the Zaca<\/a>\u201d starring the original hero, Errol Flynn was filmed in 1946 and features Scripps Institute of Oceanography along with the actor known for films \u201cCaptain Blood,\u201d \u201cThe Adventures of Robin Hood,\u201d \u201cThe Sea Hawk,\u201d and others. Zaca was the name of Flynn\u2019s beloved 118-foot schooner built in 1930, according to film history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">From sci-fi films like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gattaca\">Gattaca<\/a>\u201d to murder-themed TV shows including \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0101198\/\">Silk Stalkings\u201d<\/a>, and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0412253\/\">Veronica Mars,<\/a>\u201d La Jolla offers ocean and, coastline views, mountains, and desert scenery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Also, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netflix\" target=\"Netflix\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sitcom\" target=\"Sitcom\" rel=\"noopener\">sitcom<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grace_and_Frankie\" target=\"Grace and Frankie\" rel=\"noopener\">Grace and Frankie<\/a>\u201d is set in La Jolla, but the exteriors are filmed in other parts of California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Scenes from the 2018 film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Samuel_Project\" target=\"The Samuel Project\" rel=\"noopener\">The Samuel Project<\/a>\u201d were filmed in La Jolla and Disney+ \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Shot_(TV_series)\" target=\"Big Shot (TV series)\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Shot<\/a>\u201d takes place in La Jolla, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">REALITY SERIES<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">More recent productions include reality shows such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Real_World:_San_Diego_(2004_season)\">The Real World: San Diego,<\/a> where MTV\u2019s\u00a0The Real World goes \u201ccity to city, picking a new cast of\u00a0young folks who live together and are filmed for a reality show.\u201d\u00a0The seasons were filmed in houses in Point Loma (2004) and Bird Rock in La Jolla\u00a0(2011).<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en\">Even the Kardashian clan has spent time in La Jolla, specifically at the La Valencia <\/span>Hotel <span lang=\"en\">where they filmed their reality TV show including an evening pool scene in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leathercelebrities.com\/photos\/entry\/kourtney-kardashian-celebrating-her-grandmother-birthday\/\"> 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">There\u2019s surely not enough space here to include every place La Jolla is or has been mentioned as this is just the crux.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Yes, La Jolla is known for its beauty where people flock and continue to revel in her glory and explore what makes this city so appealing to everyone \u2013 and everything.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La Jolla is home to more than 46,000 people and a place where locals and visitors alike revel in its beauty.
