{"id":320600,"date":"2023-02-28T11:03:11","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T19:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/?p=320600"},"modified":"2023-02-28T11:03:11","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T19:03:11","slug":"volunteers-grow-the-san-carlos-community-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/volunteers-grow-the-san-carlos-community-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers grow the San Carlos Community Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It takes a village to create a community garden and at the San Carlos Community Garden (SCCG), volunteers are at the organization\u2019s heart and soul. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">For more than 10 years, individuals, families, clubs and corporations have volunteered to help build garden beds, arbors, sitting areas and garden sheds; plant and harvest produce; develop and lead education and enrichment programs for the community, and much more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">On the second Saturday of every month from 9-10 a.m., individuals are invited to attend SCCG\u2019s \u201cNew Volunteer Workshop,\u201d where participants receive a docent-led Garden tour and overview of ways to get involved.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Held on the fourth Saturday of every month from 9:30-10:30 a.m., the SCCG hosts their Produce Swap, where community members can bring their fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, recipes and baked goods to swap with one another.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Bree Gonzalez was instrumental in establishing the Produce Swap in 2019. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_320603\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-320603\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-320603 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105043\/BreeGonzalez-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105043\/BreeGonzalez-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105043\/BreeGonzalez-9x12.jpeg 9w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105043\/BreeGonzalez.jpeg 265w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 225px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 225\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-320603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bree Gonzalez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">As a nutritionist at the San Diego State University (SDSU) Foundation and a board member for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for the San Diego District, Gonzalez found the SCCG to be the perfect venue to lend her time, knowledge and cooking talents.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">[The garden] makes me a happier person because I get to mix a variety of my passions \u2014 science, nutrition and sourcing of food,\u201d Gonzalez said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">As a SCCG volunteer, Gonzalez helps organize the monthly Produce Swap which often includes a presentation of her fresh-baked treats along with a hands-on craft activity, \u2014 providing visitors with an experience that entails much more than food swapping.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">One of my favorite things is to introduce new foods to people and that happens at the swap all the time,\u201d Gonzalez explained. \u201cEveryone is so knowledgeable, we\u2019re always teaching each other.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_320604\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-320604\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-320604 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105236\/RyanMarshall-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105236\/RyanMarshall-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105236\/RyanMarshall-9x12.jpeg 9w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20230228105236\/RyanMarshall.jpeg 263w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 225px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 225\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-320604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ryan Marshall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Ryan Marshall, a student at Grossmont College, discovered the SCCG while taking an intermediate biology course. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">One of the [class\u2019s] projects involved environmental volunteer work,\u201d Marshall said. \u201cOne of the choices was the San Carlos Community Garden. I was already interested in the garden and I thought it would be a good idea to get involved.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Marshall helps plant, fertilize, and harvest produce; and maintain the garden grounds and pull weeds. His interest in gardening and contributing to the community has kept him volunteering for the SCCG.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Seeing the plants grow and knowing that a lot of them are going to food banks and helping people, gives me a sense of connecting with those at the garden and those we\u2019re helping,\u201d Marshall explained.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Michael Land (pictured on right in top photo with Ryan Marshall), a hydrologist by trade, contributes his expertise in the quality and resources of water. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Land is a big part of maintaining the SCCG\u2019s pollinator and orchard gardens by planting, mulching, weeding and much more. Land is also particularly concerned in supporting the SCCG\u2019s mission toward stewardship of the earth for future generations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Nice things, like the garden, can go away if you don\u2019t support it,\u201d Land said. \u201cWe should all want kids to get their hands dirty, to touch soil and make that connection with food.
