COVID-19 cases are currently decreasing across San Diego County, but County health officials continue to urge people to get the primary vaccine series and the bivalent boosters. New studies continue to report the bivalent COVID-19\u00a0boosters add protection<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0against new COVID-19 variants that now make up about 40% of new cases in the U.S. and protect against COVID-19 causing hospitalizations and deaths.<\/p>\n Both COVID-19\u00a0vaccinations<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0y\u00a0treatment<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0remain widely available throughout San Diego County. COVID-19 primary series vaccines, bivalent boosters, and flu vaccines are available at local pharmacies, medical providers\u2019 offices, and County vaccination sites. People can\u00a0check online<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for the days and hours sites are open.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is encouraging that COVID-19 cases appear to be declining, but it remains important that people continue to protect themselves by getting vaccinated if they haven\u2019t already done so,\u201d said County Public Health Officer Wilma J. Wooten, M.D., M.P.H. \u201cCases, hospitalizations, and deaths are still occurring in San Diego County. Studies show COVID-19 vaccines and bivalent boosters can protect you, your family and friends from getting seriously ill. So please, get vaccinated and boosted if you haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n El\u00a0Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0y\u00a0Departamento de Salud P\u00fablica de California<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(CDPH) recommend a bivalent booster for everyone six months of age and older.\u00a0Previous CDC studies have reported that\u00a0people who have not been vaccinated run much higher risks of dying from COVID-19<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0than those who have been vaccinated.<\/p>\n COVID-19 Prevention, Treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n County public health officials notified medical providers last week that Evusheld, a COVID-19 prevention drug, is no longer available for emergency use. That was because the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it was not effective against new COVID-19 variants. However, Paxlovid, which is effective, is still widely available. Information about treatment can be found on the\u00a0County\u2019s COVID-19 treatment webpage<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Preventive Measures\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n In addition to vaccination and staying home when ill, San Diegans can take\u00a0other precautions<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to protect themselves against COVID-19, as well as seasonal illnesses like the flu. These measures include:<\/p>\n Cleaning hands thoroughly and often.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Staying away from sick people.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Wearing a facial covering, especially in crowded indoor settings.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Regularly cleaning commonly touched surfaces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Conducting home testing when exposed or when ill. The federal government is providing\u00a0free at-home COVID-19 tests<\/a>\u00a0available again through the winter for a limited time. The report is published each Thursday and tracks key respiratory illness indicators.<\/p>\n COVID-19 Data\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n For the week ending Jan. 28, the report shows:<\/p>\n 1,816 COVID-19 cases were reported to the County in the past seven days. The region\u2019s total is now 976,826.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The 1,816 cases reported in the past week were lower compared to the 1,922 infections identified the previous week.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Twelve additional deaths were reported in the week ending\u00a0Jan. 28. The region\u2019s total is 5,728.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Ten of the people who died were 65 or older.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Seven of the people had been vaccinated and five were unvaccinated or had not completed the primary vaccine series.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Eleven had underlying medical conditions.
