many of whom are still experiencing social isolation, job loss, and other negative impacts,\u201d said Christiana DeBenedict, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">irector, of environmental<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">i<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">nitiatives, San Diego Foundation. \u201cThis grant opportunity was developed to strengthen the green job pipeline in the San Diego region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Made possible through the support of the County of San Diego, San Diego Foundation additionally collaborated with Youth Will and San Diego Workforce Partnership to build upon the previous grant cycle, strengthening workforce development for opportunity youth in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">These grants redouble our commitment to our new countywide initiative to help young people secure the green careers that will define not only their future but the future of our entire region,\u201d said Terra Lawson-Remer, member of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. \u201cThese investments in a youth green jobs program are an acknowledgment that our economy can\u2019t fully recover until young people recover \u2014 and have equitable access to the green economy of tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The San Diego County Amplifying Systems of Support for Youth Career Readiness and Employment<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">grant program directly supports opportunity youth and provides them with quality career readiness, workforce development, and mentorship opportunities with a focus on access to green jobs and <a href=\"https:\/\/t.nylas.com\/t1\/234\/5b8ft47km6rf469a70ac9h1ai\/1\/041a30050ff9ed258773e929d02f12985e000ca8d0b185d2c7b34aefa21bfc29\">green spaces<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Grant funding for the green jobs program was provided by the County of San Diego as part of its Youth Environmental\/Recreation Corp launched last year by a proposal from Supervisors Lawson-Remer and Nora Vargas.\u00a0This cycle\u2019s new grant recipients include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Bayside Community Center<\/span><\/strong> <span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211; $30,000 to launch a 12-month urban agriculture training program in partnership with Access Inc. and Co-Harvest Foundation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Climate Science Alliance <\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211; $30,000 to reach out to Indigenous opportunity youth regarding local green jobs, resources, fellowships and mentoring opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">GRID Alternatives San Diego <\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211; $30,000 to expand its Solar Installation Training Program to include local opportunity youth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">I am Green Inc<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">. &#8211; $20,000 to hire interns to become stewards, advocates and change agents for environmental justice and climate equity while supporting the Mount Hope Live and Learn Residential Eco-Village.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">San Diego Canyonlands <\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211; $30,000 to provide comprehensive, environmentally paid job training while directly supporting local urban open spaces through planting native vegetation and removing invasive plants, trash and debris.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>San Diego Foundation also provided additional funding to its <a href=\"https:\/\/t.nylas.com\/t1\/234\/5b8ft47km6rf469a70ac9h1ai\/2\/a76f1f20c7adbbded47c8c5dcee82307051842dfa64b6f3f88956616fbcc1db6\">inaugural green jobs grant recipients<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Casa Familiar <\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211; $20,000 for paid internships in environmental justice and for community outreach to raise awareness and education of green jobs and careers for opportunity youth in South San Diego County.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Environmental Health Coalition <\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211; $10,000 to expand the environmental justice and advocacy internship for local opportunity youth in Barrio Logan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Instituto de Descubrimiento del Oc\u00e9ano <\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8211; $10,000 to continue environmental science and conservation career mentoring for opportunity youth in City Heights.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/t.nylas.com\/t1\/234\/5b8ft47km6rf469a70ac9h1ai\/3\/9cf9df2ff862592ee2e4d3064b6574a2334b1dc58e793d8a9ec9db32c712212c\">informe<\/a> published by the San Diego Workforce Partnership estimated that there are 417,000 people in the San Diego region between 16 and 24 years of age. Of that group, 31,000 are considered \u201copportunity youth,\u201d or those who are not in school or working. Providing this population access to green jobs and training builds a socially inclusive and environmentally conscious workforce.
