Besides being the place for ocean studies for students, and researchers, Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been and continues to be a great location for films, documentaries, and TV series. Some are known, others date decades, and more are not what you might expect to be filmed at the Scripps, but all remain a part of its history.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WHERE AND WHAT<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Located at 9500 Gilman Dr<\/span><\/span><\/span>ive<\/span><\/span><\/span> in La Jolla, Scripps was founded in 1903 as an independent biological research laboratory and became an integral part of the University of California in 1912. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Today, it occupies 170 acres along the Pacific coastline, \u201cbelow the UC San Diego main campus. The waters immediately offshore are part of the California Marine Protected Areas, and the institution has a 1,084-foot research pier that supports a scientific diving program, small boat deployment, and research and data collection. Two nearby parts of the UC Natural Reserve System, a rocky shore\/subtidal canyon, and a wetland, are used for education and research,\u201d according to its <\/span><\/span><\/span>sitio web.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

SWASHBUCKLING<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cCruise of the Zaca<\/a>\u201d<\/span><\/span> was filmed in 1946 and features Scripps along with actor Errol Flynn the handsome actor known for \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Captain Blood,\u201d \u201cThe Adventures of Robin Hood,\u201d \u201cThe Sea Hawk,\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span> and others. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Zaca was the name of Flynn\u2019s beloved 118-foot schooner built in 1930, according to film history. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

El<\/span><\/span><\/span> \u201c<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>Cruise of the Zaca\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span>starts with a helicopter view of migrating gray whales off the coast of San Diego. Flynn and his father Theodore Thomson Flynn<\/a>, a marine biologist, are seen collecting marine samples in the semi-tropics in 1952. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Scripps Oceanography campus makes its first Hollywood appearance in 1952 when Errol Flynn highlighted it in \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Cruise of the Zaca<\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u2019 an account of his 1948 adventure with Scripps ichthyologist Carl Hubbs, who happened to be a friend of Flynn\u2019s father, himself a noted scientist,\u201d said Robert Monroe, <\/span><\/span><\/span>associate director of communications\/editor \u2013 explorations\u00a0now, Scripps Institution of\u00a0Oceanography, UC\u00a0San Diego.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Turned over to the War Shipping Administration<\/a> on May 21, 1945, Zaca was acquired in 1946 by Flynn<\/a>, who starred in many a “swashbuckling” role in the Golden Age of Hollywood. More tidbits about the Zaca can be found aqu\u00ed.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

LASSIE, GAME SHOWS, AND MORE<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nEl <\/span><\/span><\/span>Scripps<\/span><\/span><\/span> campus has since made other appearances including in an episode of \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Lassie<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>set at Scripps in 1968, according to Monroe, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Scripps<\/span><\/span><\/span> has also been featured in game, reality, and travel shows.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For example, in 2008, Scripps was the subject of a category on the TV game show\u00a0\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jeopardy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty place where world-leading research just happens to be going on, too,\u201d Monroe added. \u201cAbout 10 years ago, Scripps was a \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jeopardy\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/i>category, with some of the clues filmed on-site. Richard Hammond from \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Top Gear<\/a>'<\/span><\/span> filmed a segment for one of his spin-off shows. Also, in 2014, <\/span><\/span><\/span>Scripps<\/span><\/span><\/span> and its\u00a0Keeling Curve<\/a>\u00a0measurement of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were featured as a plot point in an episode of HBO’s\u00a0\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Newsroom<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, <\/span><\/span><\/span>Scripps<\/span><\/span><\/span> was in the more obscure <\/span><\/span><\/span>California Coastal Trail<\/a>\u00a0KCET TV series \u201cScripps Institution of Oceanography: Coastal Meander Trail<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>in 2015 (above). The plot was a look at a newly built section of the coastal trail that passes through Scripps.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Scripps Institution of Oceanography was established over 100 years ago as the Marine Biological Association. Today, as part of the University of California system, it still honors those origins, not only as a research institution and school but with the Scripps Coastal Meander Trail. Featured in this video while a new portion was under construction (it’s now completed and open), the publicly accessible walk serves as an alternative to walking the California Coastal Trail on the beach\u2026\u201d according to <\/span><\/span><\/span>IMDb.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Scripps<\/span><\/span><\/span> has also appeared on screen dating as early as in \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>The Caves of La Jolla<\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u201d according to IMDb, and was a documentary short. It was released as a split reel along with the western\u00a0\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Three Daughters of the West\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/i>sobre Oct. 16, 1911, <\/a>by the American Film Manufacturing Co. <\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Its director was Allan Dwan<\/a> and was described as \u201cMany beautiful pictures have been made by foreign manufacturers of picturesque places in their own country, but none of them surpass the natural beauty and rugged grandeur of our own West. SCRIPPS<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> HISTORY<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to its <\/span><\/span><\/span>sitio web<\/a>:<\/span><\/span> \u201cFor more than a century, Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been dedicated to providing exceptional educational opportunities. As one of the world\u2019s oldest, largest, and most important centers for marine, earth, and atmospheric science research and public service, Scripps Oceanography\u2019s educational mission is to train its graduate students to perform innovative research and to apply and communicate scientific knowledge for the benefit of society and the environment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cResearch at Scripps Oceanography encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans, earth, and atmosphere.
