Some are known, others date decades, and more are not what you might expect to be filmed at the Scripps, but all remain a part of its history.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>WHERE AND WHAT<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Located at 9500 Gilman Dr<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ive<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> in La Jolla, Scripps was founded in 1903 as an independent biological research laboratory and became an integral part of the University of California in 1912. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Today, it occupies 170 acres along the Pacific coastline, \u201cbelow the UC San Diego main campus. The waters immediately offshore are part of the California Marine Protected Areas, and the institution has a 1,084-foot research pier that supports a scientific diving program, small boat deployment, and research and data collection. Flynn and his father <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theodore_Thomson_Flynn\" target=\"Theodore Thomson Flynn\" rel=\"noopener\">Theodore Thomson Flynn<\/a>, a marine biologist, are seen collecting marine samples in the semi-tropics in 1952. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Scripps Oceanography campus makes its first Hollywood appearance in 1952 when Errol Flynn highlighted it in \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Cruise of the Zaca<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">,\u2019 an account of his 1948 adventure with Scripps ichthyologist Carl Hubbs, who happened to be a friend of Flynn\u2019s father, himself a noted scientist,\u201d said Robert Monroe, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">associate director of communications\/editor \u2013 explorations\u00a0now, Scripps Institution of\u00a0Oceanography, UC\u00a0San Diego.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Turned over to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_Shipping_Administration\" target=\"War Shipping Administration\" rel=\"noopener\">War Shipping Administration<\/a> on May 21, 1945, Zaca was acquired in 1946 by<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Errol_Flynn\" target=\"Errol Flynn\" rel=\"noopener\"> Flynn<\/a>, who starred in many a &#8220;swashbuckling&#8221; role in the Golden Age of Hollywood.
