Some of those voters call San Diego State University home.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">According to a report from the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University, some 27% of voters in the 18-29 age range voted last month. The previous high for that age grouping to vote in a midterm was approximately 31 percent in 2018.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Historically, young voters have consistently voted at lower rates than older voters do, according to Kimberly Twist, a political science professor at San Diego State University.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I think it&#8217;s important for everyone to vote, not only college students, but it is true that younger voters &#8211; by turning out at lower rates &#8211; have less of a say in what happens in politics, even though many of the decisions taken at the local, state, and federal levels affect their day-to-day lives,\u201d said Twist. \u201cWe usually focus on federal election outcomes\u2026but we shouldn&#8217;t forget state and local elections. The California government takes actions that directly affect SDSU students, such as budget and curriculum decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At SDSU, students were encouraged to get involved in the election by the \u201cRock the Vote\u201d campaign. \u201cRock the Vote\u201d aimed to encourage civic engagement amongst students by helping them register to vote and providing them with ballot education information. This midterm season, they registered more than 500 student voters.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Various campus political organizations also encouraged students to get involved by hosting election activities. This included lobbying for candidates, phone banking for propositions, meeting with representatives, presenting midterm information, and hosting guest speakers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Above all, the student leaders of these groups emphasized the importance of voting.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I believe voting is, and will forever be, the strongest weapon of a democracy,\u201d said Josh Rawson, president of the College Republicans<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-317423 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103429\/GOP-of-SDSU-pic-245x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103429\/GOP-of-SDSU-pic-245x300.jpeg 245w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103429\/GOP-of-SDSU-pic-835x1024.jpeg 835w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103429\/GOP-of-SDSU-pic-768x941.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103429\/GOP-of-SDSU-pic-10x12.jpeg 10w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103429\/GOP-of-SDSU-pic-750x919.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103429\/GOP-of-SDSU-pic.jpeg 1063w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 245px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 245\/300;\" \/>. \u201cReal change comes through the ballot box. Abortion rights were brought to the ballot with Proposition 1, which would amend the California constitution to guarantee access to abortion. The Proposition ultimately passed with 67% of the votes in support.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Prop 1 was the most important vote for me,\u201d said Jazmyn Horton, president of the SDSU Imperial Valley Planned Parenthood Generation of Action. \u201cWhen there is something like Prop 1 open for debate, I feel it&#8217;s even more important I show up to vote.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Kiarra Mapp, president of Turning Point USA at SDSU <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-317421 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-300x274.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-300x274.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-1024x935.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-768x701.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-1536x1403.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-13x12.jpeg 13w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-750x685.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9-1140x1041.jpeg 1140w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20221205103244\/IMG_6876-Turning-Point-CTC-Dec.-9.jpeg 1995w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/274;\" \/>, also said abortion was the most important issue for her in the midterm election.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I am not in favor of on-demand, tax-payer funded, limitless abortions,\u201d said Mapp. \u201cSo I watched the development of Prop 1 as closely as I could.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Mapp also referred to election integrity as an important issue for her and for many members of Turning Point USA.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I have lost a substantial amount of faith and trust in the voting process in this country,\u201d said Mapp. \u201cIf major news outlets are touting the phrase \u2018free and fair elections\u2019 then there ought to be accessible, numerous ways the average voter can prove it themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Rawson shared these concerns about fair elections.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As Republicans, we are in a constant pursuit of truth, which is why we often question the narratives told to us by varying governmental and media establishments,\u201d said Rawson. \u201cThe vile reception from the left and major media outlets at even the suggestion of oddities found at several polling sites was bewildering. Our suspicions are raised and our trust in the voting process is put into question.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Head, however, said she felt confident in the process.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I feel there are steps individuals, organizations, and states have taken to ensure a fair election, leading me to feel more secure about the process,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Other issues important to SDSU political leaders included crime and land rights for indigenous peoples.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Twist explained that voters can be informed about these and other important issues by using ballot education resources, such as KPBS proposition coverage or Project Vote Smart, which provides non-partisan information about issues and candidates. She also encouraged people to ask questions about what is on their ballot.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My department, for example, had an election event in late October, open to the whole campus, and people could ask questions about anything election-related,\u201d said Twist. \u201cWe covered local, state, and national races and implications.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">By taking advantage of opportunities like this, Twist said voters can better follow complicated political issues. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><em><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">SDSU campus photo credit: Karen Austin.
