There has been a changing of the guard at the\u00a0Newport Avenue mall in Ocean Beach,\u00a0with mostly newer tenants\u00a0banding together to collectively promote and market themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The popular\u00a0indoor\u00a0mall at\u00a04967 Newport Ave.\u00a0is\u00a0now\u00a0home to The Philosopher\u2019s Stone, Brew Wave Coffee, Seth\u2019s Chop Shop, OB Mindful Goods, San Diego Holistic Healing\/Reiki by Rylee\u00a0and Ocean Beach Business Center on the ground floor, along with\u00a0Anamaya Vintage Store\u00a0upstairs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The mall\u2019s occupants are reflective of the community they serve. They are proud, independent, free thinking, artistic and altruistic.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

OB Mindful Goods<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Diana Dembeck owner of OB Mindful\u00a0Goods\u00a0art haven said mall tenants have been \u201cthinking of banding together as a group because we find it\u2019s been really helpful.\u201d She noted\u00a0coming up with a new formal name for the mall\u00a0may be necessary as, \u201cWe hear all the time from people referring to us as this little alleyway back there.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of her business\u00a0model\u00a0she said: \u201cWe have art supplies and we also sell local artist\u2019s art,\u00a0make our own handmade soap and have jewelry and fiber arts.\u00a0If you\u2019re an artist looking for supplies \u2013 this is it. If you\u2019re looking for gifts \u2013 this could also be it.\u201d
\nPainter Jeremy Evans\u00a0noted\u00a0OB Mindful Goods\u00a0is a \u201cdo it yourself place\u201d that puts art supplies \u201cback into circulation. We try to provide people with a place where they can come and buy brushes and stuff without having to go outside the community.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0OB is artist friendly, Dembeck\u00a0pointed out: \u201cWe noticed a bit of a gap in the market. So we\u2019re here to fill that gap.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We find out what people want and stock it,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Evans\u00a0adding, \u201cWe try to reduce some of the consumption of the art stuff.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dembeck loves her job and her retail space. \u201cI\u2019m surrounded by beautiful artwork all day in my little gallery,\u201d\u00a0she noted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s great to\u00a0be a\u00a0part of a community that\u2019s in an art neighborhood with a lot of artists,\u201d agreed Evans.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>We\u2019ve got another retail space in the back of the mall where we\u2019re holding macrame and other classes now,\u201d added Dembeck noting that, when you\u2019re being creative, \u201cIt puts you more in a meditative state where you\u2019re not thinking about the problems of the world.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Healing Collective SD<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis space has really transformed a lot already and it\u2019s going to keep going,\u201d enthused Allison \u201cAly\u201d Auffenberg of the retail space\u00a0in Unit 6 at the mall\u00a0she and Rylee Culverwell have created since January.\u00a0The pair are\u00a0offering<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>numerous forms of holistic healing\u00a0by appointment<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>including Reiki, Balinese herbal massage, bio-field tuning, plant medicine, moxibustion, children mindfulness, cupping, life coaching and private yoga sessions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe came together to form this healing studio where people can have access to all different sorts of healing modalities,\u00a0things they haven\u2019t tried before,<\/span><\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/span>said Culverwell, adding\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the healing arts she and Auffenberg practice are both \u201cvisceral and experiential. It\u2019s really cathartic. This is what people need right now after COVID. Everyone just feels so out of balance.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It really is based around the person too,\u201d noted Aufenberg\u00a0about their business model\u00a0adding \u201cwe treat psychological and emotional stuff. If we see something depleted, we help to replenish it. We\u2019re from the same school as acupuncture and meditation. Only we don\u2019t use needles, just our hands.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The healing collective is adding a retail section. \u201cIt\u2019s all going to be organic, very natural products that help people to come more into themselves and feel better,\u201d noted Auffenberg. \u201cThe biggest thing is just for people to check out our website, and come in and experience our one-on-one sessions or different classes we\u2019re offering.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Philosopher\u2019s Stone<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I\u2019m the anchor store in here right now, I\u2019ve been in the mall the longest, 16 years,\u201d said Wendy Adelstein of the Philsopher\u2019s Stone Crystal Shop in\u00a0#8.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Philosopher\u2019s\u00a0Stone rocks, literally.\u00a0It\u00a0is\u00a0chock full of crystals and stones of every imaginable size and type.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Crystal healing is an ancient\u00a0practice dating back at least 6,000 years to Mesopotamia.\u00a0It has been recognized as a form of medicine with philosophies borrowed from Hinduism and Buddhism.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With a homey boutique look, the\u00a0crystal\u00a0shop also offers\u00a0jewelry inlaid with stones as well as\u00a0selling complementary products like sage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The proprietor is not a mineralogist. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m more of an energy worker,\u00a0I can feel the subtle energies of the stones,\u201d noted Adelstein,\u00a0who is from a social work background. \u201cAt first it was people mostly in the metaphysical community who would come in.\u00a0Now it\u2019s so mainstream, I feel like I\u2019m on people\u2019s shopping lists.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Adelstein designed her store so \u201cpeople could come in, spend some time and slow down.\u201d She pointed out\u00a0the shop\u00a0started as a hobby that evolved into a full-blown business. \u201cI love being around stones,\u201d she admitted adding, \u201cThere are people who come in here for healing, and there are people who come in here because, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s a pretty bracelet, I just want to wear it.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

People are being more discriminating these days with what they buy, noted Adelstein which has made it harder for OB shopkeepers in general. \u201cGo support your local businesses,\u201d she implored.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ocean Beach Business Center, Suites 10 & 12<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ocean Beach Business Center co-owned by Chris and Jo Peregoy, moved to the mall from Santa Monica Avenue in September.\u00a0The couple<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>really like the new space in their new place.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got our own two, really three units here,\u201d\u00a0Chris<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>said. \u201cWe were able to create the spaces that we wanted. We even have<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>our own little personalized mailbox\u00a0room<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for customers that we never had before.\u00a0The mall is open seven days a week, so customers have their own code to get into the mail room through the keypad from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Chris said they\u2019re now also able to do something else they\u2019ve always wanted to do in their new space, which is separating the shipping aspect of the business from\u00a0its<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>printing side. \u201cNow we\u2019re able to have a dedicated shipping location with a self-serve packing table for people to use, especially helpful during the busy holidays,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re still here and available to help. But if it\u2019s easy stuff, they can just do it on their own. It just makes it easier for everybody.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It also helps that, when you first enter the indoor mall, your focal point is drawn to OBBC\u2019s suites in the rear of the alleyway.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been really good timing,\u201d Chris Peregoy said of how the mall and all its new tenants are coming together. \u201cAnamaya (upstairs vintage store) came in about a month before we did. Brew Wave Coffee changed hands a few months prior. It\u2019s like all new tenants, new energy. There\u2019s just a newer vibe to the place. It\u2019s really helped out.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Also in the mall are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Brew Wave Coffee<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>offering coffee and tea as well as juice and smoothies\u00a0on the lower level, along with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Seth\u2019s Chop Shop<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, a full-service hair salon and tattoo\u00a0parlor<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>The coffee shop opened on July 1 this year and is excited about its new home. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
