{"id":316969,"date":"2022-11-18T04:31:25","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T12:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/?p=316969"},"modified":"2022-11-16T12:37:13","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T20:37:13","slug":"eight-mini-plays-about-failed-love-debut-at-point-loma-playhouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/eight-mini-plays-about-failed-love-debut-at-point-loma-playhouse\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight mini-plays about failed love debut at Point Loma Playhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">There is a lot more going into a play behind the scenes than most people imagine before the curtain ever rises.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Such is the case with\u00a0\u201cLove\/Sick,\u201d a comedy being performed Nov. 18- Dec. 4 by Point Loma Playhouse at Point Loma Assembly, 3035 Talbot St.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Director David Sein noted the series of eight mini-plays by John Cariani was a \u201cbig hit\u201d initially in Maine, and has played worldwide. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It is about\u00a0lovers and dreamers, so just about anyone can relate when they see the short plays,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s an unromantic comedy for the romantic in everyone. The crew has been rehearsing for six weeks prior to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">the play\u2019s<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> Nov. 18 debut.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Some or most of them (actors) are in more than one play, two of them are in three plays which we call double casting,\u201d noted Sein. \u201cThe actors find it very interesting \u2013 and challenging \u2013 to be able to change their characters in the same night playing different scenes.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Actress Kara Tuckfield plays two parts in\u00a0\u201cLove\/Sick.\u201d \u201cThey are similar, have lots of commonalities, though not the same,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat makes it fun is you take this one character, and see if it ties-in with your second character.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Tuckfield noted \u201ceveryone has been wonderful to work with\u201d in\u00a0\u201cLove\/Sick.\u201d She admitted memorizing lines in plays playing multiple characters \u201ccan be a bit of challenge.\u201d But, she added, \u201cYou\u2019re having conversations with other characters who are reacting to you, and you\u2019re listening and reacting to them. If you\u2019re having trouble, the other actor helps you figure it out and get back on track.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Few in a play production are more behind the scenes than the light\/sound operator. The show would not go on without the lights \u2013 or the sound. We have one set of lights for each scene that goes on and off. I do have a copy of the script that I write my cues on.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Discussing his role as director, Sein said he carefully reads the play \u201ca number of times\u201d to get a real feel for the story and analyze the characters. \u201cThen you break the play down into many parts for rehearsal purposes,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Sein revealed his secret to directing. \u201cNinety percent of it is great casting and good actors,\u201d he confided. \u201cIf they fit, it makes your job much easier. Then the director does all the blocking: where the characters stand, where they move to. You also help design the lights, the sound, the set, and the costume props.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Of the successful outcome of any given play, Sein concluded: \u201cIt\u2019s a team effort.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><i><b>POINT LOMA PLAYHOUSE PRODUCTION<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">LOVE\/SICK\u201d by John Cariani, directed by David Sein,\u00a0opens Friday, Nov. 18 and runs through Dec. 4 \u2013 Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m. at Point Loma Assembly, 3035 Talbot St.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The show is a collection of eight slightly twisted and completely hilarious short plays.
