There\u2019s a new crustacean in town in the Midway District: King Crab.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

El<\/span><\/span><\/span> new seafood eatery recently opened in the mall at 3960 W. Point Loma Blvd. in the remodeled space previously housing Soup Plantation, which closed during the pandemic.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Its Louisiana-style menu features a plethora of seafood and other delights including: Blue, Stone, King, Snow and Dungeness crab, lobster tail, scallops, calamari, oysters, shrimp, crawfish, catfish, green and black mussels, clams, clam chowder and shrimp cocktail.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the origin of King Crab, co-owner Jenny Ipek, also a real estate broker who is from a family of restaurateurs, noted she and her husband, Engin, both \u201clove food.\u201d She added they \u201cwent everywhere on vacation\u201d looking for just the right place to fulfill their dream of one day owning a restaurant. \u201cWe went to Louisiana more than 10 years ago and loved their culture, gumbo, all the seasonings \u2013 everything,\u201d she said adding they thought, \u201cWow, this is so awesome. We don\u2019t have any similar restaurants in San Diego. So we took this (Midway) location as our first in San Diego.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ipek noted she and Engin had been eyeing the former Soup Plantation\u2019s large and open buffet space, which could accommodate all of their needs including providing room for wedding and birthday parties, wedding showers and group meetings. The new restaurant has a 224-seat capacity including outdoor patios, which will be opened next spring with warmer weather.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a lot of dining tables for guests and our food concept is all Louisiana-style seafood where you can \u2018get your hands dirty.\u2019 It\u2019s so much fun when you eat with your hands with gloves on,\u201d Ipek said. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That was clearly evidenced on a recent Friday afternoon as the visiting Patel family from Pacific Beach dined, wearing bibs and gloves, on a medley of seafoods.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Crab King has a beer and wine license. \u201cWe also have margaritas, mojitos, smoothies and Boba tea,\u201d Ipek added.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The eatery\u2019s website at <\/span><\/span><\/span>kingcrabca.com<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span> says it offers the \u201cabsolute best Cajon seafood boil combining our signature spice blend with the freshest, juiciest and tastiest seafood you will find anywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All menu items at King Crab include potatoes and corn, according to the website, which points out there are special spices to choose from such as Cajun, lemon pepper and garlic butter. \u201cWe can vary the heat level to suit any tastes,\u201d states the website.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ipek said King Crab offers 50% off all drinks during happy hour Monday through Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. \u201cWe do a lot of catering and customers can order their food for take-out and delivery from our website without paying extra money,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s (crab) getting so popular right now,\u201d said\u00a0Ipek\u00a0of similar, smaller\u00a0crab and seafood-style\u00a0restaurants sprouting up around San Diego,\u00a0some of\u00a0which have\u00a0limited parking.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For us, we have a huge parking space,\u201d noted\u00a0Ipek, adding they are also happy to\u00a0serve\u00a0patrons attending sporting events, like San Diego Gulls hockey at the nearby Sports Arena.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It is something we can do for the community\u00a0to\u00a0support each other,\u201d\u00a0pointed out Ipek,\u00a0who added\u00a0they\u2019ve gotten a positive response from clientele on their food offerings. \u201cEverything looks so yummy to them,\u201d she said about their guests\u00a0trying\u00a0new seafoods, or Louisiana staples like Po-Boy sandwiches. \u201cThey say, \u2018I\u2019ve never had this before. I\u2019m so glad you guys are here. Now I have a restaurant where I know where to go for my dinner or lunch,\u2019\u201d\u00a0concluded Ipek<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0second King Crab location is coming soon with the same business concept somewhere in North San Diego County.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
