A man convicted of attempted murder of a Harbor Patrol police officer will be sentenced on Nov. 14. The case involves a shootout in front of the San Diego Convention Center in 2021.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The sentencing of Daniel Quiroz, Jr., 31, was delayed Oct. 12 by San Diego Superior Court Judge Kenneth So because Quiroz’s attorney requested a delay.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A jury convicted Quiroz Sept. 13 of attempted murder and felony assault of officer Cody Horn, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a bystander whose eyeglasses case deflected a bullet.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Horn pulled Quiroz over after he saw Quiroz run a red light while driving a black Honda Accord around 7 p.m. on March 1, 2021, near First Ave. and Harbor Drive.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The officer asked Quiroz to step out of the car, but Quiroz pulled a gun and fired shots. Horn retreated, took cover, and fired back.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After a short time, Quiroz obeyed officer demands and raised his hands, dropped the gun, and was arrested. No one was injured.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Deputy District Attorney Fred Washington said Quiroz could face a maximum sentence of 45 years to life in prison if he is sentenced consecutively of using a gun in a violent crime. Jurors found a gun allegation true that he personally used a handgun in a crime.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Quiroz remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
