{"id":315234,"date":"2022-09-20T12:01:58","date_gmt":"2022-09-20T19:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/?p=315234"},"modified":"2022-09-20T12:01:58","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T19:01:58","slug":"cbp-seeks-input-on-uncertain-future-of-friendship-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/cbp-seeks-input-on-uncertain-future-of-friendship-park\/","title":{"rendered":"CBP seeks input on uncertain future of Friendship Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">On Monday, Sept. 12, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency (CPB) announced that they are seeking \u2018public input\u2019 in regards to the border walls adjacent to Friendship Park. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Friendship Park, which is directly on the U.S.-Mexico border, is widely considered as the most important cultural location along the border. The park previously served as the only authorized place people on opposite sides of the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">frontera<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> could converse and touch fingertips. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The ability for family and friends to reunite on either side of the wall has been eroded over the years and is now threatened entirely. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">T<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">he fate of Friendship <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">PAGS<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ark is uncertain as the CBP has plans to replace the current wall with new, 30-foot-tall fences.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_315236\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-315236\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-315236 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall-1140x855.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/cdn.sdnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20220920115643\/border-wall.jpg 1280w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-315236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the Mexican side of the border, people can still approach and touch the border wall. Here members of the Border Church pray while Americans on the other side do the same. However, the fencing means they can barely see and cannot touch hands during the prayer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The proposed fences would severely limit the visibility between the two sides of the border, and people <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">on the U.S. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">would not have the ability to approach the wall <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">like they previously could.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Upon hearing the plans to improve the walls, both advocates of the park and elected officials pushed back on the CPB\u2019s proposal. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Seth David Clark, a longtime member of the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendshippark.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>Friends of Friendship park<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> and a reverend at the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendshippark.org\/borderchurch\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>Border Church<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, spoke on what the Friends of Friendship Park would like to see happen with the border walls:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">What we have been saying is no 30-foot walls, and instead, just improving the existing 18-foot walls, as well as other things, including making sure the park is open again, since it hasn\u2019t been open since 2020.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Reverend Clark explained that Friendship <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">PAGS<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ark has remained closed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and since COVID regulations have decreased, the CBP now cites \u2018staffing issues\u2019 as the reason for the park\u2019s prolonged closure. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In response to the public\u2019s concerns, the CPB announced that they are now entering a 30-day public input period, where citizens are encouraged to voice their concerns and demands for the border walls at Friendship Park. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The public input period began on Sept. 12, and is open until Oct. 12. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">According to Paul Enriquez, the CPB\u2019s Deputy Director of Infrastructure, the border wall needed repairs:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">El <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">CBP plans to replace approximately 0.6 miles of deteriorated primary and secondary barrier adjacent to Friendship Circle in the San Diego Sector. The primary barrier, which included a monument gate, was not properly treated to withstand marine corrosion before it was installed. While it has been temporarily repaired, it is not structurally sound, resulting in safety risks to Border Patrol agents, community members, and migrants.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While there may be legitimate safety concerns with sections along the border wall, advocates of the park, such as Reverend Clark are pushing back on the CBP\u2019s plans for heightened security in the area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We recognize that there are legitimate safety concerns with plates falling down and whatnot,\u201d Clark said, \u201cbut it would be far better to figure out how to replace those without replacing everything and adding 12 feet to the walls. In doing so, they would also destroy 70-80% of the binational garden, which is treasured here.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The future of Friendship Park is uncertain, as the park has remained closed since 2020 and the CBP have not announced a reopening date. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">People<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> on both sides of the border await the CBP\u2019s decision, as families separated by the wall previously used Friendship Park as a meeting place. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To provide input, email your comments to the CBP at SanDiegoComments@cbp.dhs.gov.
