{"id":315184,"date":"2022-09-16T14:11:34","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T21:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/?p=315184"},"modified":"2022-09-16T14:11:34","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T21:11:34","slug":"la-nina-expected-to-return-for-3rd-straight-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/la-nina-expected-to-return-for-3rd-straight-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"La Ni\u00f1a expected to return for 3rd straight winter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (NOAA) <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">predicts another warm and dry winter in California<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> due to a third consecutive year of La Ni\u00f1a conditions in the Pacific Ocean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">One of the major factors influencing weather in the United States and other countries, particularly in the late fall, winter and early spring, is the La Ni\u00f1a climatic pattern<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> a natural cycle characterized by cooler-than-average ocean water in the central Pacific Ocean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In contrast to the more well-known El Ni\u00f1o, which occurs when the Pacific Ocean&#8217;s water temperature rises above average, La Ni\u00f1a means &#8220;little girl&#8221; in Spanish, whereas El Ni\u00f1o means &#8220;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">little<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> boy.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Trade winds are even stronger than usual during La Ni\u00f1a, bringing more warm water into Asia. Upwelling increases off the west coast of the Americas, sending cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. The jet stream is forced northward by the cold seas in the Pacific, which has an impact on weather patterns both domestically and internationally.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Since the colder waters force the jet stream north, a normal La Ni\u00f1a winter in the United States delivers cold and snow to the Northwest and particularly dry conditions to the majority of the southwestern part of the country. Although every La Ni\u00f1a winter is unique, they often favor below-average precipitation in the Southwest of the United States. Much of the west, including Colorado, Utah, and California have only sporadic relationships between precipitation levels and La Ni\u00f1a winters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While La Ni\u00f1a is expected to bring a warm and dry winter season, winter forecasts are inherently uncertain since so many factors in the atmosphere are not predictable months or even weeks in advance. Climate change is also adding to seasonal outlooks&#8217; complexity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sometimes, La Ni\u00f1a winters can bring more precipitation than average across nearly the entire Western United States, with recent examples including \u201807-08, \u201810-11, and to some extent \u201816-17. However, the past two winters (which were both La Ni\u00f1as) had low precipitation levels across most of the West.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdcwa.org\/your-water\/reservoirs-rainfall\/rainfall\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>According to the San Diego County Water Authority<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, every La Ni\u00f1a year has recorded less rainfall in San Diego than on average. In 2016-17, a La Ni\u00f1a year, San Diego county recorded 8.1 inches of precipitation, while the average amount of annual precipitation is 12 inches. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">For Southern California, a hot and dry winter is not what is needed <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">amid concerns about a drought<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.
