{"id":315082,"date":"2022-09-13T11:53:45","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T18:53:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/?p=315082"},"modified":"2022-09-13T12:00:33","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T19:00:33","slug":"san-diego-welcome-week-tells-immigrants-refugees-they-belong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/san-diego-welcome-week-tells-immigrants-refugees-they-belong\/","title":{"rendered":"San Diego Welcome Week tells immigrants, refugees they belong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This past Friday, the City of San Diego kicked off their annual \u2018Welcoming Week\u2019 from Sept. 9-18, with activities at City libraries and recreation centers to demonstrate the inclusivity and sense of community within San Diego. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As part of the Welcoming Week festivities, the City\u2019s Office of Immigrant Affairs is hosting a welcome note drive for San Diegans to decorate butterfly-themed <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">tarjetas<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> for newly arrived refugees and immigrants. The notes will be available at Welcome Stations located in all San Diego Public Library locations and several City recreation centers for people to decorate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Starting <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">today<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, Balboa Park will be illuminated in teal, orange, red and green<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u2014<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> the colors of the Welcoming Week campaign.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Welcoming Week is an opportunity for our region to come together to remind newly arrived immigrants and refugees that they are welcome here in San Diego,\u201d said Rita Fernandez, Executive Director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Welcoming Week events that take place throughout the country and in other parts of the world celebrate immigrants and promote a sense of belonging for newcomers,\u201d Fernandez continued. \u201cThe welcome notes that we will be preparing are a way for us to demonstrate our support for the many immigrants and refugees that come here from all parts of the world, and let them know as a welcoming city, that they are accepted and embraced in this community.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Launched in 2012 by Welcoming America and its members, Welcoming <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Network<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that leads a movement of inclusive communities becoming more prosperous by ensuring everyone belongs. The Welcoming Network works to change systems and culture by sharing new approaches to crea<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ting<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> an environment where everyone can truly thrive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">After Welcoming Week, the notes will be delivered to partner community organizations, including the International Rescue Committee in San Diego, Jewish Family Service<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, Catholic Charities and Alliance for African Assistance.
