Every Friday afternoon a troupe of musicians gathers under the shade of a giant tree <\/span><\/span><\/span>en<\/span><\/span><\/span> De Anza Cove <\/span><\/span><\/span>in Mission Bay Park<\/span><\/span><\/span>, armed with a mix of violins, flutes, acoustic guitars, banjos, and mandolins, for an impromptu concert of old-time <\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>ea <\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>hanties and <\/span><\/span><\/span>b<\/span><\/span><\/span>luegrass. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The group, \u201cEmma\u2019s Gutbucket,\u201d was named after the bucket used for making instruments from the guts of animals in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>17<\/span><\/span><\/span>th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis group has been around for 50 plus years,\u201d said organizer Sylvia Castelluzzo. It was named after the founder, a woman named Emma. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI started about 16 months ago. I just invited everybody to come play with me in the park and they all showed up. We started at the <\/span><\/span><\/span>former <\/span><\/span><\/span>visitors <\/span><\/span><\/span>C<\/span><\/span><\/span>enter and then moved over here (<\/span><\/span><\/span>a <\/span><\/span><\/span>De Anza Cove.) <\/span><\/span><\/span>mi<\/span><\/span><\/span>very Friday we meet here and play old-time<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0sailing shanties, Irish songs, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>b<\/span><\/span><\/span>luegrass music from noon <\/span><\/span><\/span>a <\/span><\/span><\/span>2 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my first time here,\u201d said Quinn Herron. \u201cI play fiddle and flute; I heard about this group and wanted to learn more, \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>o<\/span><\/span><\/span>ld <\/span><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/span>ime\u2019 music. I play a lot of Irish tunes. This is an amazing place to jam, on the sand under the shade of a huge tree, it doesn\u2019t get much better than this.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBlue<\/span><\/span><\/span>gramo<\/span><\/span><\/span>rass originated in the \u201940s and \u201950s,\u201d Castelluzzo said. \u201c\u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>o<\/span><\/span><\/span>ld <\/span><\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/span>ime\u2019 precedes ‘<\/span><\/span><\/span>b<\/span><\/span><\/span>lue<\/span><\/span><\/span>gramo<\/span><\/span><\/span>rass’ and has more fiddle music \u2013 \u2018Turkey in the Straw,\u2019 \u2018Golden Slippers,\u2019 songs like that. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s interesting how one style of music will morph into another, a lot of the fiddle tunes started in England, Ireland, and Scotland when they migrated to America, and that includes songs sailors sang called sea shanties, like the \u2018Wellerman,\u2019 that recently started a cyber dance fad.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere once was a ship that put to sea<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The winds blew up, her bow dipped down<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Oh blow, my bully boys, blow (huh.)\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

If the words sound familiar, it\u2019s because that sea-fairing shanty has joined other great dance videos made famous on <\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span>ocial <\/span><\/span><\/span>metro<\/span><\/span><\/span>edia. Everyone from grandma to a duo of dancing poodles has put their own unique spin on the 17th-century<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0toe-tapping melody.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was just walking by when I heard them playing that song from the <\/span><\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span><\/span>nternet; everybody is doing dance routines to it on TikTok,\u201d said Glenn Moses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>\u201cI had no idea that it was an old sailor\u2019s song.
