{"id":304839,"date":"2022-03-07T14:00:58","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T22:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/?p=304839"},"modified":"2022-03-04T14:03:08","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T22:03:08","slug":"elephant-trespasser-remains-a-fugitive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/elephant-trespasser-remains-a-fugitive\/","title":{"rendered":"El elefante intruso sigue siendo un fugitivo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Por NEAL PUTNAM<\/p>\n<p>An arrest warrant remains outstanding for a man suspected of child endangerment and trespassing into an elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo because he failed to show up in court as he promised.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Manuel Navarrete, 26, was seen with his 2-year-old daughter as he was trying to take a photo inside the elephant enclosure on March 19, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>He posted $100,000 bond and made all his court appearances, but missed a hearing in Jan. 2022.<\/p>\n<p>His attorney told San Diego Superior Court Judge Robert Trentacosta she had not spoken with him recently, so the judge issued the warrant for his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>As of Feb. 28\u2014almost a month and a half later\u2014the warrant is still outstanding, according to the District Attorney\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA warrant in the amount of $150,000 was issued at that time,\u201d said Deputy District Attorney Bree Garcia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur records indicate he is still at warrant and there are no future dates at this time,\u201d said Garcia.<\/p>\n<p>Navarrete lived in Fullerton, Ca. and court records say he was to have \u201cno negative contact\u201d with his 2-year-old daughter, whom he accidently dropped when the elephant briefly charged at him.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said Navarrete was apparently trying to take a picture and had his back to an elephant, which appeared to grow agitated at his appearance inside the enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Zoo tourists began yelling at Navarrete to leave the enclosure which he did. They also took video, which was shown on television newscasts.<\/p>\n<p>Navarrete had pleaded not guilty. He has not had a preliminary hearing yet.<\/p>\n<p>San Diego Police officers were called to the zoo by the zoo itself and Navarrete was arrested without incident. Police said the man \u201cwanted to take a photo with the African bull elephant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The zoo said the elephant habitat \u201cis home to our Asian and African elephants.\u201d They said the man went through \u201cmultiple barriers, purposely and illegally trespassed into a habitat\u201d around 4:20 p.m., according to their press release.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By NEAL PUTNAM An arrest warrant remains outstanding for a man suspected of child endangerment and trespassing into an elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo because he failed to show up in court as he promised.
