A couple of local scholastic swim teams have made a splash to date this season.
At The Bishop’s School, the girls team headed into this week with a 3-1 mark, while the boys stand at 0-4 for head coach Chad Bishop.
“We have a really good chance of placing at or near the top of the division at City Championships,” Bishop said. “It is tough being a small school in such a large division, but the Bishop’s girls have shown a lot of heart and swam a number of personal best times in the last few weeks.”
According to Bishop, Andrea Basaraba swam a blistering 1:01.7 in the 100 backstroke against La Jolla, and Chelsea Smith-Carmichael swam a personal best 1:14.1 this past week against Scripps Ranch.
At La Jolla Country Day School, head coach Nate Heppner and the Torreys are scoring some wins.
The girls team headed into this week at 2-0. Sophomore Melissa Berkay and junior Norae Shakur are currently undefeated in dual meet competition, while juniors Chelsea Burns and Melanie Kaplan continue to place first and second consistently.
The boys squad currently has a league record of 0-2.
“With several key injuries, it has been tough on the guys as we have little depth in any event,” Heppner noted.
Sophomore Jihoon Yoon has been a strong contributor, winning the 200 I.M. in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion versus Mission Bay.
In addition, sophomore Henry Clausner remains undefeated in league competiton in the 100 breaststroke. Other key contributors, according to Heppner, are junior Owen Qi and senior Ronny Clausner.
