Point Loma High alum and recovering shooting victim Will Barton is making daily improvements in his rehabilitation, as supporters announce another fundraiser to assist the family with medical costs.
\nBarton, who turned 21 this month, calls San Diegans “my extended family.”
\nHe will be on hand to mix and mingle with visitors as he continues his recovery after being shot three times Oct. 29 by a fugitive on a crime spree.
\nBarton\u2019s recovery from the life-threatening condition has been out of the norm, after he was given almost no chance of survival by medical and therapeutic professionals. Barton continues to defy the odds, however.
\nThe challenge now is the monumental medical bills.
\nTo help, “Strong Will Foundation Fundraiser” is set for July 9 at the Carnitas Snack Shack, 2632 University Ave., from 3 to 9 p.m.
\nTickets to the event are $45 and are available at www.brownpapertickets.com or at the door. “Your attendance will directly impact Will\u2019s recovery,” said Will\u2019s mother, Marie Najera Lonsdale. “Thanks, in advance to everyone for your support of our family.”
\nAmong the latest challenges for Barton is learning to stand and eventually walk on his own, skills he said he is determined to master.
\nIn the meantime, Barton has returned to some of the activities and hobbies he enjoyed prior to the injuries.
\nBarton has painted for many years, learning from his mother and father, both of whom are accomplished artists. Now Barton is creating new artwork using both his hand and mouth to hold brushes.
