Pacific Beach resident, David (DJ) Johnston, a mathematics teacher at Bishop\u2019s since 1993 and assistant coach of girls\u2019 varsity volleyball and girls\u2019 varsity soccer, was selected by the High School Sports Association (HSSA) as a recipient of the “Service to Sports Award.” He was honored at the 29th Annual Winter Awards Night on Feb. 6 in Marina Village.
\nIt is no surprise that he was singled out for this esteemed honor. One could not overestimate what Johnston has meant to The Bishop\u2019s School during his tenure. Many teams have benefited from his expertise and wisdom, including cross-country and track. And his influence doesn\u2019t stop there. A former practicing attorney, he left behind civil law to practice in a higher authority, the laws of mathematics! Add a beloved instructor, valued colleague and generous distributor of Hershey\u2019s Candy Kisses to his list of accolades.
\nThe HSSA of San Diego promotes high standards of proficiency and ethics in the field of high school athletics. One of its goals is to foster strong and professional relationships with post-secondary school coaches, athletic directors, and administrators. HSSA extends professional services to the coaching field, recognizes high school athletes through various events and promotes goodwill and fellowship among all the members of the athletics community in San Diego County.
