The San Diego chapter of the Association for Women in Science is hosting its biennial “Women in Bioscience” conference on May 19 at the Salk Institute, 10010 N. Torrey Pines Road. As this year’s theme of “Discovering New Heights” suggests, the conference invites scientists at all career levels to network and learn about various career opportunities in the sciences. AWIS-San Diego will also be awarding scholarships to outstanding students at the event.
Keynote speaker is Julia Brown, a member of the Tech Coast Angels organization that offers financial assistance to biotechnology entrepreneurs. She will discuss her experience in the healthcare and biotechnology industries. Among other workshops is “The Cures in Your Backyard,” a seminar on recent drug discoveries in marine microorganisms led by William Fenical of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Meanwhile, Marie Betts-Johnson, founder and president of the International Protocol Institute of California, will offer advice on international business and job etiquette.
AWIS is a national nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the equal treatment and participation of women in the fields of science, mathematics, technology and engineering. The AWIS-San Diego chapter is the largest chapter in the country, with more than 250 diverse members, ranging from professors to patent attorneys.
