The Poet Laureate of the United States, Juan Felipe Herrera, will be at The Bishop\u2019s School in La Jolla, Jan. 23 to 27. Herrera will teach Spanish language, history, poetry and writing classes. Herrera is the first Mexican-American to hold the position of U.S. Poet Laureate. Growing up in California as the son of migrant farmers shaped much of his work. Herrera is The Bishop\u2019s School 2017 Endowed Scholar-in-Residence.
\nTopics Herrera will address include: Immigration, migration, Latino and Chicano poetry, his journey as the son of migrant farmers in central CA to the Library of Congress as the Poet Laureate.

\nIn June 2015, Herrera was appointed the 21st U.S. Poet Laureate; he was re-appointed in April 2016 for a second term. Herrera is the author of 30 books, including collections of poetry, prose, short stories, and young adult novels. From 2012-2014, he served as California\u2019s Poet Laureate.
\nThe recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Herrera has received fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, the University of California at Berkeley, the Breadloaf Writers\u2019 Conference, and the Stanford Chicano Fellows Program.
