Air Group One, the San Diego wing of the Commemorative Air Force, will present AirShow San Diego at Gillespie Field in El Cajon Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a collection of aircraft and performances commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the allied invasion of Normandy. The exhibition will be preceded by a youth education day on Friday, June 6.
\nThe D-Day Doll, a C-53 that flew three missions in the D-Day invasion, will headline the show, which features P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft. John Collver\u2019s War Dog T6\/SNJ aerobatics will return this year, which for the first time will feature his race with jet car Smoke and Thunder. Military re-enactments, paratroopers and a mock battle will be featured.
\nSaturday’s events include 1940s costume dancing and a beer garden.
\nThe youth education day focuses on aviation-related science, technology, engineering and math. Kids and family attractions are also on tap.
\nThe Commemorative Air Force is a nonprofit group headquartered in Midland, Texas. The volunteer organization is dedicated to the preservation of World War II aircraft.
\nGillespie Field is located at 1960 Joe Crosson Drive in El Cajon.
