A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 3 in the case of a La Jolla man and his business partner, who have entered not guilty pleas following their March arrests in a medical equipment fraud case after they allegedly collected millions from their victims. Matthew Mazur and partner Carlos Manjarrez would display a prototype of a “SafeSnap” syringe that featured a disposable needle. They told investors they sold millions of the syringes, though there is no evidence the syringes were produced at that level, Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Gianera said.
\nFifteen victims allegedly paid $4 million to the company, and investigators say that additional investors paid as much as $64 million since 2008. A total of 61 charges, ranging from grand theft to fraudulent sales of a security, have been filed.
