Early returns showed Sanders with a 52-38 percent lead over chief rival Steve Francis. The Aguirre-Goldsmith race was much closer, with Goldsmith leading 31-28 percent. The thin margin will require a runoff on Nov. 4, the date of the 2008 general election. Voters also OK&#8217;d Proposition 99, the controversial measure that protects owner-occupied homes from government seizure.
