Writer doesn\u2019t want any events for young adults I guess after a few years, I shouldn\u2019t be shocked by what Eve Anderson writes in her columns. It\u2019s typical fluff with a heavy dose of anti-alcohol and anti-young adult. Last week (“Small World,” Beach & Bay Press, Sept. 18) she gave her opinion and her “rules” for special events. Although thinly veiled, she just should have said what she really means for those rules: No. 1: No events that involve anyone between the ages of 21 and 40 without children. No. 2: No events that draw people into the community who are also 21 to 40 without children. No. 3: Absolutely no events that have anything to do with, or in the ballpark of alcohol. No. 4: The only event worthy of closing Garnet is the PB Christmas Parade. Eve, I\u2019m sorry you had to wait 45 minutes in line for food, but that usually means the event was a huge success. I\u2019m also sorry your husband had to wait 20 minutes to park, but it sounds like a problem for Henry\u2019s and Trader Joe\u2019s parking enforcement, not an issue with the event. Street fairs are great events that all San Diego-area communities utilize to celebrate their diversity. Just because you have a bitter taste in your mouth over the PB Block Party does not mean that all street fairs are bad for the community. In fact, with our tourism numbers being drastically down this year, many businesses actually want more events to get people coming back to the beaches. Our community is made up of all kinds of people from all cultures and socioeconomic paths. Just because they are not your version of “family” does not mean they are not important to our community. Bryant Reeves Pacific Beach *** Say \u2018no vacancy\u2019 to Irish summer renters In response to Abigail O\u2019Brien Murray\u2019s letter regarding the irresponsible brats from Ireland, whose only goal in life is to party hearty in Pacific Beach all summer long, you\u2019d better believe they\u2019ll be back next summer (“Irish tourists turn apts. into summer hostels,” Beach & Bay Press, Sept. 18). As anyone who has been victimized by this worthless bunch can attest, the telephone inquiries will begin in early spring, and the callers will be relentless because they have to be able to let their bummy friends know where to find them come June. If a property owner\/manager is foolish or desperate enough to rent to these losers, he\u2019d better be prepared to charge enough in advance to cover the cost of gutting the unit and remodeling it from top to bottom. Once these revelers leave town, there is no way to haul them into court to recover damages! Since the police are powerless to help, the only way to stop this siege of our neighborhood is to form a united front that will let them know that, henceforth, there is NO VACANCY! Linda Hanson Pacific Beach *** What the ban side does not want you to know What the ban side does not want you to know is that the majority of the residents of Mission Beach and Pacific Beach do not want a total alcohol ban on Mission Beach. If you need proof, just go back to the last election on the ban. As of midnight of election night, the ban on alcohol was winning and the pro-ban side made a statement saying the people of San Diego had spoken and that we will have alcohol-free beaches. However, the beach communities vote had not been added yet. By the morning after the election, not only did the beach vote overcome the loosing deficit it had at midnight, but also added another 3,000 votes to win the election 83,000 to 80,000. Now for the facts: I have served on the Mission Beach Town Council as vice president, president and past president from 2001 to mid-2005. I sat through all the town council meetings, police meetings and City Council meetings on this subject during that time period. Crime has been on the decline without the ban since its highs in the late 1990s. When you hear about alcohol citation statistics or just plain crime statistics, most of these occur after 8 p.m., when it is already illegal to drink at the beach. All the problems with drinking at the beach occur between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there is a total of 15 weekends, including three 3-day weekends, for a total of 33 days. On those days, I would agree, some have a few problems. You can ask most everybody who lives at the beach, there are 332 days that have few problems, if any. In fact, I will take you out to the beach in the fall and winter, and you may not even see anyone on the beach. Please vote no on Prop D. Then come back and make a proposal to ban the big weekends or all weekends in that 15-week period. More than likely, this kind of compromise should appease everyone except the people who just do not like alcohol, period. I am a nondrinker and support the freedoms and rights that most of us have paid for or earned over time just by being a responsible U.S. citizen. Our rights are being taken away a little at a time.
