Time to turn to other problems
Regents Bridge: democracy in action. What a great lesson in democracy!
It was true drama, with all the excellent pro\/con speeches witnessed not just by the several hundred adults in attendance, but also by the many children in the audience.
And then the moving summarizing speech by Scott Peters followed by a convincing 6-2 vote in favor of the bridge. Some folks were appalled, others elated. That’s democracy.
Now we can direct our energies toward solving other long-neglected problems in U.C.
We can start by improving the appearance of our community.Other San Diego communities have trees and flowers in the boulevards (note that Balboa Avenue in Clairemont is undergoing extensive beautification).
Our community boulevards are barren. We need to plant trees in the Governor Drive median.
Trees should be planted in the Regents Road and Genesee Avenue medians north of Highway 52. These roads should look like Genesee Avenue north of Governor, with its 39 pine trees planted in the median.
We need trees and shrubs planted along the Rose Canyon railroad tracks to soften the noise and visual impact of the 55 daily trains and the soon-to-be 100-plus trolleys per day.
So the rest of San Diego looks upon us as the endless wranglers of University City!
Let us change their (and our) perception of us and end the wrangling. The votes have been cast. We can now beautify this community visually, verbally and socially.

Me entristeci\u00f3 mucho escuchar la noticia de que nuestro Concejo Municipal vot\u00f3 para construir un puente y una carretera a trav\u00e9s de un gran ca\u00f1\u00f3n \u201d Rose Canyon.
Recientemente, fui a caminar por Rose Canyon con mi familia y amigos, y realmente lo disfrut\u00e9. Fue realmente divertido.
Escrib\u00ed al alcalde y al concejal Scott Peters, ya todos los dem\u00e1s miembros del Concejo y les ped\u00ed que no permitieran que se construyera un puente a trav\u00e9s de este maravilloso ca\u00f1\u00f3n.
Durante mi caminata, vi lagartijas, mariposas, halcones de cola roja, ardillas listadas, melones de coyote, una colmena, un arroyo, muchos tipos de p\u00e1jaros y una gran cantidad de plantas y flores diferentes.
Si hubiera un puente construido a trav\u00e9s de este sendero, habr\u00eda demasiado ruido del camino para disfrutar del \u00e1rea al aire libre. Adem\u00e1s, los animales se alejar\u00edan del \u00e1rea o se ver\u00edan amenazados ya que su h\u00e1bitat estar\u00e1 en peligro.
No tenemos muchos otros lugares para hacer senderismo que est\u00e9n cerca. Hay senderos Torrey Pines y el sendero San Clemente, pero Rose Canyon es \u00fanico. Simplemente no ves los mismos animales y plantas en esos otros senderos que ves cuando caminas por Rose Canyon.
\u00a1Aprendemos cosas nuevas sobre los animales, las plantas y nuestro medio ambiente simplemente haciendo caminatas! Es como un sal\u00f3n de clases al aire libre. Ahora parece que se van a llevar este sal\u00f3n de clases en Rose Canyon.
Entiendo que algunas personas sintieron que el puente y la nueva carretera ayudar\u00edan al tr\u00e1fico y algunas otras cosas. Pero, por alguna raz\u00f3n, parece que podr\u00edan haber resuelto el problema de otra manera.
Solo hay un Rose Canyon. Si lo arruinas, todos perderemos algo hermoso.

Totalmente absurdo, peligroso y una desgracia.
I am not a smoker.
I don’t approve of smoking in my house, restaurants, buses, theatres or other indoor places.
But, I cannot fathom the hysteria against smoking on the beaches.
Es una verg\u00fcenza esperar que los socorristas vigilen las infracciones de fumar. Es totalmente absurdo y peligroso, y creo que ilegal agregar esta carga a las responsabilidades de salvar vidas de los socorristas.

The power not to buy
The Union-Tribune carried a story on Aug. 2 about how the Chinese government killed 50,000 dogs after three people died of rabies.
The five-day slaughter spared only military guard dogs and police canine units. Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot.
It will not be easy, but I commit to never buying another product that says “made in China” and I invite you to do the same.
It will be difficult because almost everything you pick up in the United States is made in China.
We have the power not to buy and I for one am going to exercise it.
