SPAWAR recognized for energy savings, efficiency
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Center San Diego (SSC San Diego), located in Point Loma, for its efforts in achieving significant energy savings while protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
In addition, two SSC San Diego energy managers were recognized for their work and are featured on the DOE’s commemorative “You Have the Power” posters.
The DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program created the “You Have the Power” campaign in 1997.

Monumento a Cabrillo lanza concurso de fotograf\u00eda
Officials with Cabrillo National Monument has initiated a photo contest through July 31, allowing residents a chance to have their captured image to appear on thousands of 2009 annual park passes.
The contest, the first of its kind, is designed to attract submissions of everything from the Juan Rodriguez statue and the 19th century Old Point Loma Lighthouse to spectacular images of San Diego Bay, tidepools, the Pacific Ocean and wildlife.

Point Loma Hostel slates open house on May 8
Residents are being invited to an open house event at the Point Loma Hostel on May 8 to get a glimpse inside one of Hostelling International USA San Diego Council’s gems.
The event begins at 6 p.m. and a travel poetry reading will take place at 7:30 p.m. with original poetry and classic poetry having a travel theme.
The Point Loma Hostel is located at 3790 Udall St.
The event will feature international cuisine, music and tours of the hostel. Admission for the event is $10, which includes dinner and a chance to win door prizes. Reservations are due May 5.

Point Loma Eastern Star food, item drive planned
Point Loma Eastern Star #490 will be joining with sister chapters in San Diego County to support a May 24 project called “Sensational Saturday.” The event will involve the collection of nonperishable food items to give to local food banks and the collection of clothing and household items for local domestic violence centers, along with care packages to send to military servicemen and women overseas.
