LJHS PTA hosts substance abuse program
The La Jolla High School PTA will host a program on teen drug and alcohol abuse education for parents Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
Michele Bennett of The Phoenix House, a national organization involved in substance abuse from early prevention and education to treatment, will be the speaker.
The program includes information on warning signs, symptoms and behaviors, current drugs and new trends, and drug dealers on school campuses.
Bennett will also lead a question and answer peiod.
The presentation will take place at La Jolla High’s Parker Auditorium, 750 Nautilus St.

Meeting will discuss Bird Rock Park gate
A public meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27 to discuss the Bird Rock Park entry gate and access.
The meeting will take place at 5 p.m. at La Jolla Recreation Center, 615 Prospect St.
The project would involve installing a main gate within the existing fence at Bird Rock Elementary School, 5371 La Jolla Hermosa Ave., to provide community access to Bird Rock Park.
The proposal also includes a 4-foot sidewalk along Waverly Street, an accessible ramp and a new paved area around the drinking fountain and bleachers, which will be replaced with accessible bleachers. For further information, contact project manager Alexandra Corsi Morgan, (619) 533-3149.<\/p>\n
SIO to hold Surf Bowl this Saturday
Teams from 12 high schools will compete in the annual La Jolla Surf Bowl this Saturday, Feb. 23 at UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This one-day, regional ocean science competition will pit teams against each other to decide which will advance to the National Ocean Sciences Bowl finals in Alaska in April.
San Diego County high schools taking part in the competition are Carlsbad, Christian, Francis Parker, Helix, Hilltop, La Jolla, Palomar, San Ysidro, Scripps Ranch and University City.
The Surf Bowl is a fast-paced, quiz show-style competition. Teams will compete in a round-robin, double-elimination format and will answer marine science questions on a variety of different subjects, ranging from biology to related literature.

Munitions at Miramar go boom in the night
Marines from Camp Pendleton are practicing their battle skills this month at Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar before they head to war.
“It’s a little different training than usual,” said a public affairs officer Gregory A. Wolf, USMC. “We don’t really know how it’s gonna affect [the area].”
Residents in and around Miramar may hear what public affairs officer Lt. Jill Leyden described as a “boom,” among other noises, lasting through Wednesday, Feb. 27 when the troops deploy.
The training exercises include small arms munitions and pyrotechnics, among other things, Leyden said.
This can be anything from gunfire to illumination rounds, which would effectively light up the night sky, or battlefield, she said. Some sounds could be compared to an M-16 assault weapon.
The Marine Corps said the units would conclude their exercises by 10 p.m. nightly.
“An entire infantry battalion is coming down there to do pre-deployment training,” Wolf said.
Because Camp Pendleton is sending down the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines’ entire unit, the area may become a bit noisy, and there will “definitely be lights in the sky,” he said.
Although the training is routine, the effects may be lighter and louder than normal.<\/p>\n
YAT presents ‘Aladdin’ at Sherwood
The Young Actors’ Theatre (YAT) will perform Disney’s “Aladdin” at Sherwood Auditorium, 700 Prospect St.
“Aladdin” is the story of a boy who finds a magic lamp, complete with outrageous genie. His adventures include fighting the evil wizard Jafar and a romance with Princess Jasmine.
Performances will take place Saturday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, March 2.
YAT, which is headquartered in Spring Valley, is a nonprofit organization led by Jean M. Isaac.
Year-round classes are offered to children ages 6 to 20.
