The boys\u2019 basketball team blasted Kearny 53-40 last week in its regular season finale, posting a perfect 12-0 mark in Central League play to earn the first PLHS league title since 1997. Both Dillon Fitzmorris (17.8 points per game) and Jamal Agnew (16.6) led the team offensively, with each connecting on 55 three-point shots. Defensively, Fitzmorris (63 steals), Agnew (58) and Grant Wilburn (61) created havoc with their hustle, disrupting opponents\u2019 offenses. The Pointers and head coach Chris Brisco were guaranteed a home game (played Feb. 20) when playoff pairings were announced last weekend. The Pointer girls\u2019 soccer team also landed atop the City League standings for the second time in the last three years. Last week, the Pointer pitch was the place as the Pointers put a big exclamation mark on their season with an 8-0 whipping of City League foe Madison to finish conference play with a 6-0-2 record. On the season, sophomore Taylor Hopkins netted five goals for the team lead, with seniors Jewell Roth, Caelle McKaveney and freshman Jordan Patane all recording four.\u00a0 In goal, junior Jordan Green (12 games, four shutouts) and senior Mia Sakasegawa (eight games, two shut-outs) shared honors. Head coach John Murphy and his team were guaranteed a home game (played Feb. 19) in CIF playoff pairings. Elsewhere, girls\u2019 basketball (Dave Aros, head coach) finished its regular season 7-5 in league play with a close (43-39) loss to Central League champion Kearny. The 12-7 overall record should earn the team a CIF playoff spot. Boys\u2019 soccer (Elliott Savitz, head coach) was 12-3-7 overall, but fell to 2-2-4 in Western League play against the likes of powerful University City and St. Augustine. Seeding meetings will determine the Pointers\u2019 fate. In wrestling, the City Conference Championship meet was held recently. Head coach Phil Moore\u2019s Pointers finishing fourth of 19 schools. \u00a0Top Pointers were: \u2022 Keegan Bell: second place, 154 pounds; \u2022 Bailey Dugdale, second place, 172 pounds; \u2022 Chase Scillato, third place, 128 pounds; \u2022 Jovanny Sanchez, third place, 222 pounds; \u2022 Michael Harris, fourth place, 122 pounds and \u2022 Michael Serrano, fourth place, 287 pounds. These Pointer wrestlers competed last weekend at the CIF finals, hosted by Cathedral Catholic. <b>EXTRA POINTS<\/b> \u2022 Both Pointer boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 basketball teams held &#8220;Senior Night&#8221; Feb. 8 to honor departing players. The girls defeated Clairemont 54-15 and the boys dispatched the Chieftains 63-40 to make for a big night. \u2022 The girls\u2019 soccer team\u2019s &#8220;Senior Day&#8221; included the parents speaking to the crowd about their daughters prior to the game. It must have worked. The girls went out and destroyed Madison in an 8-0 blitz. \u2022 Girls\u2019 water polo had a rough year in the pool, swimming to a 6-22 record overall. The team, with three freshmen and six sophomores on a 14-girl roster, is already looking forward to the 2013-14 season. \u2022 Spring is the busiest season for prep athletes. No less than 13 teams are currently finalizing rosters for play through Memorial Day. Starting play soon are boys\u2019 baseball, golf, tennis and volleyball.
