{"id":296101,"date":"2007-08-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-30T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdnews.com\/in-the-neighborhood-8\/"},"modified":"2007-08-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-30T07:00:00","slug":"in-the-neighborhood-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.sdnews.com\/es\/in-the-neighborhood-8\/","title":{"rendered":"En el vecindario"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cabrillo Monument makes appeal for volunteers <br \/>Officials at Cabrillo National Monument are seeking volunteers to enlist in the Volunteers-In-Park program to present curriculum-based education programs to school groups and assist in the park&#8217;s general education program. <br \/>As part of Cabrillo&#8217;s celebration of the National Park Service&#8217;s 91st anniversary, park officials will conduct interpretive and education training at the monument between Sept. 11 and 13. <br \/>The training will include modules of the NPS Interpretive Development Program as well as an orientation to Cabrillo National Monument&#8217;s curriculum-based education. <br \/>Volunteers-In-Park will work closely with rangers and will have the opportunity to pursue professional certification in interpretation, with is also recognized by the National Association for Interpretation. <br \/>Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of one morning per week from 9 a.m. to noon and join periodic in-service training at various times during the year. <br \/>For more information, call ranger Jason Richards at (619) 523-4578, or ranger Marcy Marquez at (619) 523-4573. Additional information may be obtained by visiting www.nps.gov\/-cabr\/forteachers\/index.htm.<br \/>Workers sought to help preserve Famosa Slough <br \/>Volunteers are being recruited to participate in a work party at Famosa Slough on Saturday, Sept. 8. <br \/>The nature campaign will target the planting and care of new California native plants and wetlands plants as well as the removal of invasive plants. <br \/>The event will also involve cleanup of the Famosa Slough and channel, treatment ponds and other areas. <br \/>Volunteers are being asked to meet at the corner of West Point Loma Boulevard and Famosa Boulevard at 9 a.m. Workers are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing, preferably long pants, long-sleeved shirts, a hat and sturdy shoes. <br \/>Participants who are under the age of 18 must obtain the signature of a parent or guardian. <br \/>For more information, call (619) 224-4591, or visit www.famosaslough.org.<br \/>Group sets Breast Cancer Awareness Workshop <br \/>Officials with the American Cancer Society will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Workshop at the Point Loma Discovery Shop on Saturday, Sept. 8. <br \/>The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the newly opened Discovery Shop, 3609-C Midway Drive. <br \/>Cancer Society officials say an estimated 2,000 San Diego women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. <br \/>As many as 400 may die in 2007, said officials. <br \/>The American Cancer Society&#8217;s tenth annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is slated for Sunday, Oct. 31 in Balboa Park. <br \/>For more information, call (619) 682-7445, or visit www.makingstridessandiego@cancer.org.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cabrillo Monument makes appeal for volunteers Officials at Cabrillo National Monument are seeking volunteers to enlist in the Volunteers-In-Park program to present curriculum-based education programs to school groups and assist in the park&#8217;s general education program.
