One assistant hosed water down the plastic; another kept the kids moving. The new version is inflatable and much more compact ” but just as much fun as kids (some full-grown!) cheerfully zipped downhill. The park was full of families when we arrived, enjoying Jiva Dream’s mellow reggae sounds.
Giving Credit”¦Up to her blond hair in cotton candy was PB Town Council president Ruby Houck, while husband Bernie manned the Celebration’s barbecue grill. Fellow PBTC members Georgina Smith sold food tickets and Karl Jaedtke supervised the slip-n-slide.
Marcella Teran, coordinator of PB’s Neighborhood Watch, worked the popcorn machine. She told me we’re up to 35 block captains; if you’re interested in getting to know your neighbors and making your street safer, you can call her at (858) 273-5656 or the PBTC office, (858) 483-6666.
PB Rec director Richard Crider reminded me that the PB Town Council was also a co-sponsor of Celebrate the Family. (Oops” I neglected to mention them in my last column.) That started me thinking about the event’s evolution. A citywide celebration offered to all San Diego rec centers, it was once held on PB Rec’s site. On hot asphalt, in July. In the late 1990s, it wisely shifted to our scenic park.
The Friends of Kate Sessions Park offered to co-sponsor about 2001 and has provided a band ever since. “We’re also selling engraved tiles around the tot lot,” said Friends representative Michele Youngers, as she served up snowcones. You can call (858) 274-3168 for details.
New Orleans in PB”¦From Creole to Dixieland, crowd-pleasing Theo and the Zydeco Patrol led off this year’s first PB Town Council Concert on the Green with warm, danceable music last Sunday.
Another full house (full hill?) at Kate Sessions Park included families with zillions of little ones and several dozen dogs, firmly on leashes.
In case you missed the Girl Scouts selling snacks and drinks, they weren’t there because headquarters ruled Scouts could only sell cookies. Meanwhile, PBTC board member Marcie Beckett quickly purchased provisions. “We wanted to offer inexpensive snacks and drinks for folks,” explained Marcie. Look for their table near the Town Council booth.
Next Sunday’s concert features Big Time Operator, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Slip-Slidin’ Away”¦We could hear the happy whoops of youngsters as we came over the hill ” slip-n-sliders, up at Kate Sessions Park for Celebrate the Family.Remember the old slide, with its long plastic tongue aiming halfway down Kate Sessions hill?
