The La Jolla Country Day School girls volleyball team turned in a strong performance last week.
The Lady Torreys beat Mission Bay 3-0 on Tuesday, then entered play in the Fall Classic.
Friday’s pool play gave the team two wins over Kearny and Horizon, with both matches being 2-0. The final game for the pool championship was a hard-fought 2-1 to Granite Hills.
Last Saturday morning, the Lady Torreys began play in the top gold division against Patrick Henry and were victorious, 2-0. The first round of playoffs put the team against a good Rancho Buena Vista team, where LJCD lost in two very close games.
Heading into this week, the Lady Torreys are 6-2 for the early season.
La Jolla High competed last weekend in the Lakeland Invitational in Rathdrum, Idaho.
With Karly Deer injured, Meredith Green came in to set and lead the way for the Lady Vikings.
La Jolla swept the competition and lost a three-game championship match against Hanford (Central Washington).
Amanda Gordon, Haley Cameron and Grace Drozda all made the all-tournament team (the most players from any team in the tournament).
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights and head coach Tod Mattox opened play last week with a three games to one (25-23, 25-15, 11-25, 26-24) win over neighboring La Jolla.
After taking a commanding 2-0 lead, La Jolla fought back to nearly even the match at 2-all and force a fifth game.
“Our players kept their poise, even though La Jolla had a game point in the fourth game,” Mattox said.
Bishop’s was led by Julie Gantz with 10 aces, Carly Bollert with eight kills and Jacqueline Rhodes with seven.
On Friday, Bishop’s traveled to San Jose to participate in the St. Francis Invitational. The Lady Knights opened play by defeating Salinas and a tough Notre Dame (Belmont) team.
Bollert tallied 14 kills in the two matches, while senior libero Laurel Casey provided outstanding ball control (20 perfect passes, 13 digs).
On Saturday, Bishop’s lost to eventual tourney champ St. Mary’s, then dropped a close one to Maria Carillo. Ina Kamenova led Bishop’s with 13 kills and three aces in the two matches, while Stephanie Yetter chipped in with three aces and four kills.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
