The local CIF scholastic basketball playoffs got off on the right foot for a pair of Division IV girls teams last Friday, with La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School and The Bishop’s School winning their respective contests.
LJCD placed three players in double figures en route to an easy 69-21 win over Coronado. Dominique Connors led the way with 15 points.
The Bishop’s School got a game-high 26 points from Kathleen Roerhkasse en route to a 60-48 victory over rival Horizon.
Meantime, La Jolla High was held to two points in the first quarter in dropping a 55-36 decision to Kearny last Tuesday in an opening round Division III contest.
Alyssa Wilson paced La Jolla (11-12) with 13 points.
On the boys side, The Bishop’s School (21-9) ended LJCD’s season last Saturday with a 50-40 win in Division IV action. Bishop’s was led by 18 points from David Stotelmyre.
LJCD ended its campaign at 16-12 with the loss.
La Jolla High (15-13) was a winner in its first contest, rolling to a 74-49 win at home over Mt. Miguel.
Andrew Heap led the way with 20 points, as the Vikings pulled away in the second and third quarters with 43 total points during the two stanzas.
“We felt great about the effort,” La Jolla High head boys coach Kamal Assaf noted. “We thought our team played with tremendous determination, with great pressure on the ball and did an excellent job of rotating on their key players.”
Assaf noted the coaches were also pleased with how the team passed the ball without turning it over.
“Overall, it was incredibly gratifying to see our team play together and execute our game plan,” Assaf added. “Each teammate that stepped on the floor made us stronger. We were running a relay race with 14 players and the pace kept up no matter who stepped on the floor.”
La Jolla was to move on and play at Mission Bay in a Division III semifinal as the Village News went to press last night, Feb. 28.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
